The support group held its first meeting last Thursday, electing Dennis Booth as chairperson.
“The purpose of the Forbes Prostate Cancer Support Group will be to provide support and information to prostate cancer sufferers and their families,” he said.
“We have members who have been through prostate cancer and are there to help anyone going through the same thing.”
The group has already gathered significant support with the Forbes Diggers Swimming Club naming the group as its charity for the year and donating $500 to get the committee off the ground.
“We’re extremely grateful to the Forbes Diggers Swimming Club for their donation,” Mr Booth said.
Mr Booth said prostate cancer is a major men’s health issue, accounting for 25 per cent of male cancers and 13 per cent of all male cancer deaths.
He says the committee will meet on a regular basis and anyone is welcome.
“The group is formed primarily to provide support and information to prostate cancer sufferers and their families,” Mr Booth said.
“But wives, partners and families provide crucial support and they’re all welcome to attend.”
The next meeting will be held at the Forbes Youth and Community Centre on Thursday, October 13 at 5.30pm.
