From September 25 to 30 he will be one of hundreds of archers from at least 14 nations competing in the World Field Archery Championships.
Johnston, who has been shooting since he was 12 or 13 years of age, has 30 years of experience in the sport.
This competition, he is working with a new bow – a Prime Rival Compound.
Competitors need to shoot 28 targets a day, with four arrows, for five days of competition.
In preparation, Johsnton has been shooting 80-100 arrows a day every chance he gets.
“We’re out there six hours a day,” he explained.
“It’s an open field archery range with hills, creeks and flat spots. We could cover eight or nine kilometres a day.”
Johnston has shot on the Wagga Wagga course a number of times but it does change – Targets could be placed at any distance from 20 feet to 80 yards.
“They will make it a tough course,” he said.
“We could be standing on a slope shooting up or down a hill – it will be an endurance test.”
The local is looking forward to meeting archers from all over the world and seeing the vast array of experience and shooting styles they bring to the table.
