The Australian-American actor is in the middle of a career comeback after a decade-long break from the industry following several drink-driving charges and a highly-publicised anti-semitic tirade.

His first directorial work in 10 years, Hacksaw Ridge, received a 10-minute standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival earlier this month.

Now it's possible Gibson will be making a return to the screen, with the 60-year-old said to be in talks to star in upcoming action film, Every Other Weekend.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Gibson is negotiating a role as an ageing spy in the film which is being directed by French filmmaker Benjamin Rocher.

The script centres on a father who has convinced his son that he is a CIA spy when he instead works in the agency's IT department. During a trip to Paris, they are placed in a life-threatening situation and it's revealed Gibson, who plays the grandfather, is actually a spy.

Gibson became a household name in the 1980s thanks to roles in actions films such as Mad Max, Lethal Weapon and Braveheart.

His last on-screen role was opposite Sylvester Stallone in 2014's The Expendables 3.

Hacksaw Ridge, Gibson's most recent directorial work since 2006's Apocalypto and 2004's The Passion of the Christ, stars Andrew Garfield as a WWII army medic.

Due locally on November 3, the film is expected to be a serious awards season contender.

Gibson will also star alongside Sean Penn in period drama The Professor and the Madman, which follows the creator of the Oxford English Dictionary and the mental asylum inmate who submitted than 10,000 entries.

The actor will produce the film, based on the Simon Winchester book, after acquiring the rights nearly two decades ago.
