Director Greg Ballantyne is thrilled with the way the show has come together.
“I started out directing at the M&D 10 years ago with an 80s show that I wrote myself called Groovy Moves, and then followed that up with The Wedding Singer,” Greg said.
“Rock of Ages definitely has the same vibe as those shows.
“The music is fantastic, and there are so many great lines and some fabulous dancing.
“The storyline certainly isn’t deep, but I guarantee you’ll have a good time.”
The show features a mix of new, young talent and familiar faces.
Greg is appearing as the off-beat narrator and guitarist Lonny, while the lead roles are filled by teenagers Matt Prow and Shannon Green.
“Matt and Shannon are just unbelievable in this show,” Greg said.
“At times you forget that they’re just kids, they are so professional.
“Their performances will blow you away, but more importantly they’ve been wonderful to work with - so dedicated and reliable, they’re a real credit to themselves and their families.”
Dooley Thomson also stars as legendary singer Stacee Jaxx, while Harrison Baker returns to the M&D as washed-up rocker Dennis Dupree.
“I love working with Dooley,” Greg said. “You just never know what’s going to happen next, but you can be sure it’s going to be funny.
“Harrison is also so talented – he’s a genuine rock star in his own right, so it’s been great to have him back in the M&D.”
Georgia Goodrick, Piper Hennock, Erin O’Leary and Kiira Christensen also turn in great performances long with Christie Green, Andrew Francis and Hannah Tanswell.
The musical inspired the hit film Rock of Ages starring Tom Cruise, Russell Brand and Alec Baldwin, however the storyline is somewhat different and much more tasteful in places.
“There are some adult concepts and low level language in the show, but if you came along to Footloose or Hairspray, it’s no different to those shows,” Greg said.
“There are rock songs, pop hits and power ballads that still play on everyone’s radios and iPhones today.”
