The Forbes Golf Club is recovering so well that many players are exhilarated by the opportunity to play. Saturday’s Individual Stableford, had a handsome field of 45 players welcomed the opportunity to swing wildly. The winner with inspired play, were Ralph, Ted and Stuart. Andrew McDonald did produce a near flawless display to produce 42 points. He was quiet on the front-9 but then opened fire on the back-9 with six pars.
Runner-up was Matt Lawryk from Parkes. Being a tall man he was able to produce a long swing that ensured the ball was propelled a prodigious distance down the fairway. Matt’s 39 was a pretty even compilation. The ball sweep went to 34 points on count back, being distributed to those above plus: 38 P Maher; 37 P Duke, I Bown, R Morris; 36 G Drane, A Grierson, C Barrett; 34 S Sallaway, N Duncan.
The NTP’s went to: 18th first B Shine, 18th second – R Nixon, neither of whom got their ‘2’. The 18th was the only Par 3, and played twice. But for each round that players passed by the hole there were no 2’s whatsoever.
While there were no short-cuts to outrageous albatrosses, or is that albatrossii, there was one eagle legitimately scored. Not only was Phil Maher startlingly visible in his bright red shirt, but he played a stupendous shot to record an eagle on the 11th hole.
Phil’s drive was a bit wayward and drifted into the trees on the right, finishing near a trunk. Using his 2-iron, an okay backswing but punctuated follow through, Phil punched a shot which scorched out of the foliage, ran along the fairway, rose up the green, and dropped into the hole. Unfortunately he only scored four points, as this was the first round using the front-9 index and he did not get a shot!
Another spectacular shot but very much less rewarding was Craig Barrett’s opening tee shot on the tenth. A big swing resulted in a limply flighted ball that plopped straight into the water.
Max Haley showed how the water on the 15th should be played. His second shot went very flat and skimmed the water to run along the fairway, finishing not far from the green.
There are some ‘bogey curses’. Scott Kirman knew his day was going to be bad when he played his first hole, the tenth on his first time around. He thought he might have dodged the ‘bogey curse’ when he parred the first four holes, but then his game collapsed.
Barry Shine missed his ‘2’, which was not surprising to his group. Barry was pretty good from tee to green, but his putter was misbehaving. It produced 44 putts for Barry’s round, during which Barry felt more comfortable on a 15-foot putt than a two foot putt.
Bobby Borger did not have a care how he played. He was too busy celebrating his birthday to worry about golf. His biggest chuckle came when he heard that Gordon Hurry had bogged his baby ride-on mower at the front of the Golfie when Gordon was mowing the sodden grass.
Once again the regular Sunday Stableford Medley crowd were out. The winner was Judy Hodge, with 36 points, compiled with a steady stream of 2-pointers, a few 3-pointers and only one ‘wipe’.
The NTP’s went to: 18th first J Hodge, 18th second nobody. This is the second week that the Sunday players have not been able to find the 18th to at least try for a ‘2’. Maybe some direction signs should go up.
Thanks to Jack, Darren and the volunteers for work on the green. If you can help please ring Jack.
Here is the news: The FGA AGM will be held on October 26, at 6:30pm. Gather upstairs in the Golfie. Your support in these matters is encouraged.
Daniel is organising a Forbes version of the famous ‘Skins’ events, to be known as the ‘Forbz Skinz’ Comp. This will be played on Friday evenings, 4pm. The first hit is on October 28. While 000’s of dollars will not be won, Dan has some good incentives. Give him a call to get more info.

The dates are, Taylormade November 23 at 12noon–5pm. Ping November 24 at 12noon–4pm. Titleist November 24 at 4-7 pm.

Now that the course is getting back into shape the Wallace Cup will be foremost in some minds. Marty Cahill has cruised into the Semi-finals and eagerly awaits his next opponent. For those still to play, now is the time to take advantage.
The Sixes competition started this week. There is still some organisation needed to get the Pools and the Draw going, but at least while you are out there you are recording your score. And do not forget the reduced rate for extra rounds played, and the Sixes Team Coaching special - $10 per player and Daniel will get you sorted.
It is crystal ball time: Because of the interruption to the competition schedule, the Captains have been re-organising events to catch up on previously postponed items. Details are yet to be finalised. Saturday, October 29 18-hole event, sponsored by Country Mile Motor Inn, with the Stableford Medley October 30. It is also the NSW Country Championships, being held at Goulburn. November 5 may be the Monthly Medal, with the Stableford Medley on the Sunday. November 12-13 is the Classic weekend.
Ladies Golf
The good news is that the back nine was played twice on October 12 by 8 Ladies who were happy to be back on part of the course after a long break. Sue Shine had a great round with 39 Stableford points followed by Heather Davidson on 38 points and nearest the pin was Alison Kingston, this was not a sponsored competition due to the front nine still being closed so the girls just played for a ball.
The bad news is that the Ladies Championships set down for this weekend have been postponed, best for everyone to keep in touch with the pro shop for the rescheduled date. Our AGM held last week was very well attended with around 20 Ladies in attendance, we have two new faces on the Committee with Fleur Wells and Sarah Black being nominated, thank you to all for the big effort as life at Forbes has been far from exciting in the last two months. Kerry would like to remind the girls that have sponsored events during the year to have their donations in as soon as possible because our presentation and Christmas party is only seven weeks away.
Anyone that is interested in putting their name down for the Silvers Team please do so, this will be held in Dubbo on November 4, and the lowest six handicappers get to represent Forbes in this team event, this list is on the board, if you wish to know more about it just ring Kerry 0428 511 175.
The good news is that our girls had a wonderful time at the Mudgee Open Tournament last weekend with over 80 players from various parts of the state playing. Streams running through their course perfect weather with slick greens except for the speed, made happy golfers however the scores were not as you would expect as it was challenging.
On Saturday at Mudgee the 4BBB was played and our Forbes stars of Kerry Stirling and Debbie Dingwall were the Runners Up with 43 points. The other pairs from Forbes were Colleen Venables and Marie Reid 36, Colleen Bratton and Robyn Hammond 35, Teresa Armitage and Lyn Kennedy 35 Robin Lyell and Janet Smith played-sorry I didn’t get your score.
On Sunday with over eighty players we played in Scratch, Handicap and Stableford Competitions, ten of our girls played with happy outcomes. The best being Marie Reid in Division Two running second with 99 Scratch. Next was Teresa Armitage running first in Division Three Handicap with 78. In Division Two Handicap Colleen Venables came second with 77. In the Stableford Division Two Sally Crosby came second with 26 points. Others that competed were Colleen Bratton, Robin Lyell, Kerry Stirling, Debbie Dingwall, Janet Smith and Lyn Kennedy.
On a finishing note for this week Wellington Open Tournament is now being played on November 9, as they have water issues as well. They were due to play at the end of this month when Duntraleague Tournament is on-now you can play in both for those interested.
