Minor fours - A real team effort: Peter Perfect Mackay played the match of his life to bring home the underdogs. The team with Rob Priest as lead, Ray Dunstan as second, Gunna Williams as third and Peter Mackay as skip, were lucky last Saturday to stay in front all the way and win by 25:18 from Clive Herbert, John Stringer, Billy Adams and John Bentick. Clive said he doesn’t often give away accolades but Peter Mackay deserves one for that match. At one point the two thirds could not pick the third bowl even with a tape measure (and no umpires were in sight) so Perfect Pete suggested they toss for it. Clive said he had played for forty years and had never seen that done before. Peter said that fours is more a team match than any other and he relied on his team mates to have bowls in the head, or in defence when that is necessary, as he only has two bowls to play. It was a very enjoyable match for all players. Peter Ray Gunna and Rob now progress to the finals against Alan Hilder, Bobby Grant, Grant Lambert and Wayne Burton, which will be played tomorrow.
Minor triples: Last Saturday morning Peter Tisdell, Scott McKellar and Tony Bratton just scraped in to win by 21:20 from Alan Hilder, Bobby Grant and Wayne Burton. At the 14th end the score was 20:9 in favour of Tony’s team then in the next seven ends they could not get a point. It was 20 all at the conclusion of twenty one ends so an extra end was played. Tony, Scott and Peter picked up one to take the match. How close is that?
Sunday morning bowls by Ron Goodger: On a sunny Sunday morning 22 players turned out for their day in the sunshine. John Ashcroft was the only one to place a resting toucher. Welcome back Ashy, well done in the windy conditions on a fast green. Peter Tisdell and Glen Kearney picked up the winning rink playing against Brian Joliffe and Russell Hodge. The runners up went to Peter (Sid) Walker, Alan Smith and Barry Anderson who played Lesley Dunstan, Alan Hilder and Lindy Cannon.
Alf Davies and Col Breaden defeated John Lasker and Cliff Nelson. Rod Howarth and John Kennedy played to win against Peter Baker and Lyall Strudwick. Ray Dunstan and Clive Herbert were in good form again against John Ashcroft and Scott McKellar.
This Sunday will be the second round of the interrupted Gator Merritt event. That will be completed the following Sunday. The Gunn and the Jake Corliss events will follow and finish just before Christmas. All players in the Bentick handicap singles have been handicapped and the draw is complete, Check it out on the board. Please arrange to play as soon as possible. The initial games will be played to 21 with handicap adjustment.
Wednesday at One: Last Wednesday Eddie Gould and Alf Davies played like champions to take a 30:12 win from Gunna Williams and Pater Greenhalgh. After a slow start Johnny Gorton and Ray Dunstan outclassed their opposition, John Cutler and Cliff Nelson, by 23:17. Then in the triples Bill (Last Bowl Bill ) O’Connell, Don Hodson and Barry Wright were too strong by 18:11 for Rob Priest, Scott McKellar and Col Breaden. Bill was selected as skip of his team and played so well under pressure. Thanks gents.
Thursday arvo: Last Thursday we had 24 players. There was a tie at 20:20 between Peter Tisdell & Glen Kearney Vs Geoff Brown & J Gilson. The other matches weren’t so close. Ernie Egan and Bobby Grant scored a 32:12 against K Lincoln and Scott McKellar. Flash and Graham West took 37:13 from Pam Stevens and Lyall Strudwick. Ian MacCallum and Alan Hilder were not too shabby with a 29:13 win over Tony Bratton and Bill Looney. Clive Herbert and Al Phillips showed no mercy with a 33:21 score against Cliff Nelson and Viv Russell. John Cutler and Grant Lambert also picked up a 26:14 win from Billy Adams and Harvey Elliott.

The draw for the winning rink went to the Magpies who defeated the three Amigos by 19:14. While the draw for runners up team went to Tyre Power who went down 16:11 to H E Silos. Then MG defeated Gunna’s by 19:17. Wrights and Wrongs had a win by 19:11 over the Bush Divas. Bedgerebong 2 picked up a good win by 21:8 from Gem.
Mixed pairs and triples: You are invited to put your name on the board for the Mixed Pairs and Triples which will be played early November.
Vale Keith Kopp: We all extend our condolences to Marlene and Keith’s family. Keith was one of nature’s gentlemen and he will be missed by us all at the Bowlie.
Last Wednesday the first meeting of the newly elected committee was full of ideas to improve bowls in Forbes. Next year’s calendar is in the hands of a capable sub committee so I can report on that when it is completed. One suggestion was for teams nominating for the next year’s Minor Events to be drawn from a hat. Skips would go in one hat, leads in another, seconds in another and so on.
Saturday morning bowls will be tried again. At the moment we have Saturday 29th October set for a start. It will be an early 9.30 start with chooks as prizes.
Indoor bowls
by Wendy Burns
Don’t know where WD Forty has been practicing but the last two Mondays he has been playing on top of the jack every bowl. He is in top form.
The old Rooster was playing well also, Chad got fed up and put a chair no the mat. He was out to upset the pair one way or another. Dizzy Lizzie played the bowl of the night though, well done Lizzie. Possum tried so hard as skip but that pesky Rooster was just too good.
Bubbly Bev told her she was entitled to stamp on his foot, but it must have been those bright red braces with white spots, they had Possum dazzled.
Winners were Wayne Downes and John Read with 18 points. Runners up were Lyall Strudwick, Liz England and Wendy Burns with 12 points. Good luck to the players travelling to Leeton next weekend.
Bowls Monday nights, names in by 6pm for 6.15pm start. Everyone welcome.
