Motorists heading out the Cowra Road yesterday queued at the Iron Bridge, with roadworks crews at work repairing the road just beyond the bridge.
Council’s General Manager Danny Green says Council is starting to assess the damage.
“This will continue for some time as there is still potentially up to 20km of local roads still under water in the south-west of the Forbes Shire,” he said.
“At the moment emergency repairs are being undertaken as required on a number of national, state and local roads in the Forbes Shire.
“Motorists are reminded to drive to the road conditions and take care when travelling on roads that have been affected by flood water.”
One of those roads is the Henry Lawson Way to Grenfell: Forbes Shire Council’s website warns motorists that the road surface has deteriorated significantly due to the saturation and extra traffic from the Newell Highway diversion.
Numerous rough surface warning signs have been placed along the route.
The Newell Highway remains closed between Forbes and West Wyalong. The majority of local roads including Bedgerabong and Wirrinya have reopened.
NSW Minister for Roads, Maritime and Freight, Duncan Gay estimated that more than 80 per cent of shire roads had been damaged by flood water to some degree.
