Scaffolding around the heritage building in Lachlan Street went up in the second half of last week and the building is now almost full enclosed by it.
An Australia Post spokesperson said the works are part of the organisation’s heritage program and expected to take 45 days, weather permitting.
The heritage team is also looking after the town clock and expect it to be fully operational again shortly after the scaffolding is removed.
“The works have been approved by Forbes Shire Council along with Heritage New South Wales,” the spokesperson said.
Forbes Post Office was built between 1879 and 1881.
The Heritage Council of NSW describes it as a two-storey rendered and painted brick building in the Victorian Italianate style of a grand scale, with Second Empire influence.
It appears that between 1900 and 1913, single storey face brick additions, including a telephone exchange were added to the southern corner and eastern side.
