Saturday’s competition was a trail of a Par-3 format, where every hole was a par ‘3’. There were some easy tee placements and some beguiling placements, each of which tested a range of skills. Our thanks go to the sponsors, Forbes BrineCure, who came on board at short notice and made this all possible.

In all there were 56 players, men and ladies, and with prizes distributed across the board.
The Mens A-Grade Handicap winner was Bruce Carpenter who seemed to have his putter working really well to score a 50 nett. Runner-up was Dan Bayley with 52.75 nett, who used this day to fine tune his approach shots for Pennants play.
The Mens B-Grade Handicap winner’s prize went to a presidential figure, that being Andrew McDonald. His 47 nett was a show of consistency. Frank Donohoe with his 52 nett, only had one major blemish, it was enough to slow him down.
The Mens C-Grade Handicap winner was Brett Slack-Smith with a 48.75 nett. His score was a model of numerical balance. Runner-up was Steve Grallelis with 49 nett. He bemoans that one short putt on the eighth and that dastardly tree on the tenth.
The Ladies Handicap winner was Ethel Coombs with 47.25 nett, the best nett score of the whole day. Runner-up was Robin Lyell with a classy 48.25 nett.
Prizes were awarded to Scratch winners, being: Men A-Grade: P Nixon (60); Men B-Grade: R Borger (66 on count-back); Men C-Grade: M Cartwright (70 on c/b); Ladies: J Hurkett (63). The best score against the “par of 54” was Dan Bayley with 55, but he had already won a prize.
The ball sweep went to 56.75 nett, including those above plus: T Edols, L Byrne, B Squires, M Spice, R Morris, T Sharpe, A Callaghan, T Morgan, L O’Connor, B Everest, M Haley and S French.
The NTP’s went to: Ninth Ladies: B Drabsch, Men: S Grallelis; 18th – Ladies: B Shields, Men: A Borger. None of these got their ‘2’ on the correct hole. Two’s were scored on nearly all holes with the major omissions being the seventh (a long hole), the 12th (surprisingly) and the 18th (gosh!).
There were the usual golfing woes. One player managed five three putt greens, so how Bob Borger managed to get the B-Grade scratch is inexplicable. To add to his woes, he had a three putt from four feet, with his last two putts being each three inches long.
The trees still interfered with some tee shots, even though the way was clear. Max Haley’s tee shot on the eight bounced into the water. Stevie G played a lower, shapely shot through the gap in the trees to finish on the green. But alas, he had a ‘short putt’! Other players were seen fishing their balls out of the water on the fourth and the ninth, and again the OB on the seventh nabbed a few players. So all in all, it was not a terribly different day to other golf days. The Sunday Stableford Medley field was made of 13 keen persons, eager for their Sunday exercise.
The winner was Shane Sallaway, with 39 points, ahead of Scott Kirkman with 37 points. Shane’s score never varied between three or five. Two birdies on the front nine coupled to a par back-9 showed some solid golf. The ball sweep went to 34 points, being collected by Ray Taylor and Peter Rowe (Condobolin). The NTP’s went to: Ninth no one; 18th – R Hamilton. Richard Hamilton (Parkes) was once again back on the course with his good mates Peter Rowe (now at Condo) and Ken Gallagher (YarrawongaMulwalla). Good to see you again guys.
Here is the news: Last Sunday, Forbes Golf Club was represented in all four Divisions of the CWDGA Pennants for 2017, played at Cowra GC. Conditions were milder than previous weeks, with an initial cooling breeze that gained strength later on. All of the Forbes teams played Bathurst teams.
The Division 1 team was very pleased to have success at last, winning 3/2. Steve Betland showed some power, taking his match 5/3, while Pete Nixon had a tougher battle, winning on the 18th. Peter Dawson relished the conditions to regain his winning mantle, taking his match 4/3. Dan Bayley was again just off the pace, losing 5/4, and new-comer Charlie Dwyer did well but ultimately fell 4/3.
The Division 2 team needed to do well but once again luck was not with them as they faltered 3/2. This week Tim West led the group, but try as he might he lost 3/2. Andrew Dukes had a day to forget, slipping away 5/4. Mark Collits was pleased with his progress, winning 4/3, and Todd Callaghan let out a whoop when he won 2/1. Dave Mylecharane came very close but an errant shot cost him the game 2/1.
The Division 3 team had a good 3/2 win, once again led by John Zannes. His 5/3 win shows he relishes the responsibility. Peter Cowhan kept his good form going, fortuitously winning 1 up, and Max Haley enjoyed his match to win 4/3. Dave Rhodes once again shook his head at the chances he missed in his 5/4 loss, while Jeff Haley played well all day but was always second, losing 7/6.
The Division 4 team once again were in the winner’s circle with their 3/2 win. Geoff Betland was steady all day and stayed in front to win 4/3. Stuart French had a good baptism of fire in his first Pennants match. He was 2-down with but a few holes to play, and managed to fight back to level, before finally losing on the 20th hole. Garry Pymont is relishing this format, finishing with a strong 4/3 win. Richard Smith had a hard task against a renowned Bathurst stalwart. He battled well but just missed, losing one down. Steve Grallelis once again led off the team with a very fine opening tee shot. From there on he was never headed, capping the team score with an 8/7.
Next Sunday the Pennants will be held at Parkes, where once again all four Forbes teams will play. Nobody is assured of a spot in the semi-finals, but the Division 2 side have the hardest task.

Sixes Golf Gets much Tighter

The best Members nett scores were scored by Bob Borger (B&C Auto) with 31.5, Kylie Brockman (Daniels Team) with 31.5, and Don Ridley (LITT) with 33. The Non-member better players were: Chris Roylance (Roylance’s A1) 30, Brodie Hodges (EHAG) 32.5, and Jayme Sherritt (Platypi Player), on 33.
The Scratch scores went to Men: Shane Sallaway (37), and Ladies: Heather Davidson (46). The best Team score of the week went to Roylance’s A1 with 98.5 total. They have done this in consecutive weeks but still cannot top their Pool, There was nobody even close to them.
Pool 1 results saw B&C Auto, Boys & Girls, Parstime and Storage Solutions win. The best player in the pool was Bob Borger, ahead of Barry Toole (Parstime – 33) and Ethyl Coombs (Boys&Girls – 33.5).
Pool 2 winners were ASI Capital, Kool Kats, Bush Diva’s, Hit n Miss and Flip Floppers. The best score of 102 by Flip Floppers. The best players were Alison Hearn (Flip Floppers – 33), Doreen Barnes (Bush Diva’s – 33), and Gordon Hurry (Flip Floppers – 34).
Pool 3 winners were Hook Drive & Sink It, Roylance’s A1, F Troop and Lost in The Trees. The better team was Roylance’s A1 who scored 98.5. The best players were Chris Roylance, Don Ridley), and Grant Howell (Grant Howell AE – 33).
Pool 4 winners were Platypi Player, Forbes Toyota, Daniels Team and Bush Rangers. Forbes Toyota had the best score, with 102.5. The best players were Kylie Brockman, Brodie Hodges, and John Bruce (South Leaders - 33).
Other ball winners were:
- Pool 1 – Deborah Dingwall, Janet Smith, Ron Morris, Adam Borger.
- Pool 2 – Geoff Coles, Libby Godden, Jenny Fletcher, Geoff Betland.
- Pool 3 – John Ridley, Mitch Roylance, Matt Duff, Nick Turner.
- Pool 4 – Jayme Sherrit, Simon Flynn, Jenny Watts, Nick Ryan.
Two of the four Pools have the top two placings separated by less than one point, making things very tight indeed. In Pools 1 and 4 the leaders have a handy margin but must not be complacent.
The round this week is a double points round, which may see some real upsets in the making. This is a real ‘do or die’ venture at this stage, so concentrate on everything you can, but mostly the fun to be had playing golf.
Good luck to you all in these last two weeks before the semi-final comps.
