Emergency services personnel were called to a serious motor vehicle accident eight kilometres east of Forbes along the Escort Way on Thursday afternoon.
Ambulance, SES and Fire services took over 90 minutes to remove the man from the vehicle, before airlifting him to Liverpool Hospital with numerous breaks to his leg and hips, as well as internal injuries.
His 84-year-old mother was removed from the car by a passerby.
The elderly female has been treated for a broken wrist.
It is believed a Holden Station Wagon left the road and collided heavily with a large gum tree at about 3:45pm on March 16.
The pair had been travelling west along the Escort Way heading to Forbes.
“At this stage it appears that fatigue may have been an issue,” said Detective Sergeant Steve Howard.
Police are seeking witnesses who may have seen the accident to contact local Police.
Det Sgt Howard thanked everyone for their cooperation with the rescue.
"It is a testament to all those emergency services personnel who were in attendance from 4:45pm until after midnight when the road was finally reopened.
“Accidents like this are very testing on local resources but the collaboration of all of them working together resulted in these two persons being removed from the vehicle which had impacted heavily with the tree,” he said.
“These incidents can be tough on all those that attend and even more so when those being assisted are known from within the community.”
