Late last week some torrential downfalls of rain caused waters to rise and creeks to flood once again.
Some areas of Forbes were affected, with a significant amount of surface water affecting the golf course.
These photos show that once again the 8th green was an Island green, with no access to play you ball.
Also, it shows that at least someone was happy with the conditions. The Magpie Geese were enjoying themselves on the 10th fairway.
Saturday was meant to be the Rugby Union Bali Memorial Day (previously known as the Greg Sanderson Memorial Golf Day), but with many fairways under water this had to be cancelled.
At the time of going to print it was not known if this event would be held in 2017, but if cancelled then significant effort would go into ensuring the 2018 event would be hugely successful.
The wet conditions have also affected the playing of the Semi-finals in the ASI Capital sponsored Sixes Competition for 2016-17.
With the course unavailable for a period, it was decided to allow games for the last of the semi-finals to be played by this Sunday, 2nd April.
The Final has been postponed to 9th April, with the Presentation Dinner to follow that evening.
The rain has also affected the scheduled greens renovations. Some of the early seeding and sanding has been washed away and will require re-application.
Some ‘spiking’ on the greens was undertaken but is yet to be finished, requiring the greens to harden up yet.
The continuation of the work shall commence when the fairways and greens dry out a bit.
Currently we have the back-9 holes in play, with a return to 18-holes as soon as we are able.
The Lachlan Valley District Mens Pennants and Championships have been postponed to April 23rd. All players are encouraged to participate.
There will be both Teams and Individual events for Stableford and Stroke-play honours.
Contests will be in a number of Grades so nobody will miss out on the chance for glory.
Coming up we have the three Ball Spring Creek Golf Classic. This is quite a challenging format, where teams comprise players of different handicaps.
Each player achieves a Stableford score for each hole, but whether it counts towards the team or not depends on whose tee shot it was.
You get to play your own game, but you are also in a team event. This is something out of the ordinary and should challenge many players.
Arrangements are underway for the Forbes Open, scheduled for May 14. This will incorporate a Qualifying round for the NSW Open. The winner of the Forbes Open will gain a spot in the NSW Open field. Other opportunities for higher handicapped players are also being organised.
Last Saturday a group of Family and Friends gathered at the Golfie Hotel to toast the life of Brian Monaghan, who recently passed away. Brian’s life story was narrated, and Ray Taylor provided candid comments on his time with Brian as both a golfing mate and a friend. Thank you to all who attended.
As the tree management programme progresses, a serious amount of wood is being generated. It is intended to organise working bees to re-shape these piles of wood into stacks of firewood, which will then be sold and raffled. All those willing to help are asked to watch the notice board and be ready to grab your chainsaw and axe and join the crowd.
The “Play the Lie” rule trial has been quite successful, such that this will become the normal rule for Mens Competition, with a ‘Preferred Lie’ Rule being invoked if course conditions (for example – significantly wet ground conditions!) warrant this. Be sure to keep your eye on the Local Rules Board.
Do not forget the specials being offered through the Pro Shop and a Thursday/Friday Comp. This comp is a 6-hole event, with tee off from 4pm. The fee of $19 ($15 for members) provides entry into the comp and a drinks voucher, to have with your schnitzel. Again, see Daniel.
With the wet weather there has been the need to re-arrange the golf programme. So here we go:
