“Our practice has been working on this project for over five years and I’m pleased these panels will be unveiled as part of Forbes Heritage 2017,” Dr Neale Somes said.
“We are committed to acknowledging the lives, work and dedication of former doctors who served our town.
“The panels give the Forbes community an insight into the men who were the town’s doctors.”
This year’s panels explore the lives of father and son, Drs Henry and Jim Delohery.
Dr Henry Delohery came to Forbes at the beginning of last century and practised for more than 20 years, during which time son Jim was born in Forbes.
Dr Jim Delohery returned here after World War II and practised for many years. Uniquely these doctors are the only father and son to have served the Forbes community.
Dr Jim Delohery is also the only medico to have been born and practice in Forbes.
Dr Geoffrey Young will also be honoured this year. Dr Young operated a flying doctor service based in Forbes from the mid 1940s.
For eight-and-a-half years, he flew and serviced his own planes, conducting weekly clinics in 12 outlying communities and flying out critical cases for treatment at the nearest District Hospital.
“These were extraordinary doctors with unique stories,” Dr Somes said.
“As I am keen about all facets of the history of Forbes, I’m excited with the prospect of revealing yet another layer of the town’s history.
“Members of both families will be attending this year. I extend an invitation to the Forbes community for the unveiling.”
The interpretive panels will be unveiled on Monday, 8 May at 6.30 pm at the Forbes Medical Centre where light refreshments will be served.
If you would like to attend please contact Forbes Shire Council on 6850 2300. Numbers are limited and bookings close on Friday, May 5.
