The ever-popular event saw kids collect a souvenir child-sized fire hat and a Brigade Kids activity book to take home.
It was also an opportunity for families to learn about fire safety – with this year’s focus on reducing the risk of kitchen fires and the theme “keep looking while cooking”.
Station Command Brian Clarke AFSM said almost half of all house fires started in the kitchen, usually when people fail to keep an eye on the stovetop.
“Regrettably, hundreds of injuries occur every year from cooking-related fires and people have lost their lives as a result,” he said.
NSW Fire and Rescue advice is, don’t leave anything on the stove unattended.
If the pan does catch fire, turn the stove off (if it is safe to do so) and use the lid to cover the flame.
Use a fire extinguisher or fire blanket in the first few seconds of ignition if you are confident, but never use water on an oil or fat fire.
