Boost for Age of Fishes
The Age of Fishes Museum is another step closer to housing Canowindra’s famous fossil collection on site.
The Australian Museum’s Branch Manager Life and Geosciences, Cameron Slatyer, visited the Age of Fishes to give advice on the site’s new purpose built display building.
Sharon D’Elboux, Chairperson of the Age of Fishes Museum said the dimensions of the building would be around 40 metres by 15 metres.
“It’s a big space but within that space there will be area to store the fossils but also to allow work stations,” she said.
“We want to be able to open the building up to the scientific community to come and have a look at the fossils and to university and school groups interested in evolution.”
Ms D’Elboux also said that once the new building was in place the possibility of opening the original site could be considered.
“We need to consider that if we ever open the original site that whatever we find out there can be brought to this new site,” she said.
“Dr Alex Ritchie thinks there’s a lot more out at the site he wants to go through the road and closer to the creek.
“He also thinks there may be new species he hasn’t discovered in that space.”
