The mother-of-two took out fourth place in her age category of 35-39 at the NSW CrossFit Masters League in Sydney on June 18, five months after giving birth to her second child.
“I missed out on State selection by one point, there was only one point separating first to fourth and on count back I was allocated fourth in NSW,” Haylee said.
“This was an awesome outcome for me as I am only five months post-partum with my second child.”
It is a very big mental challenge. I’m really looking forward to seeing how far I can go in this sport as there is nothing like a challenge.
- Haylee Redfern, Personal Trainer Anytime Fitness
Haylee qualified as one of 10 finalists to compete at the NSW CrossFit Masters League after her results were submitted in the first round of the competition, which involved a certified coach or judge recording and signing off her workout times each week for four weeks.
At the CrossFit Masters, CrossFitters were required to complete three challenging workouts in one day and the top two athletes were selected to compete at the State Titles on the Gold Coast in October.
The Anytime Fitness Forbes personal trainer took up CrossFit, a strength and conditioning program consisting mainly of a mix of aerobic exercise, calisthenics (body weight exercises), and Olympic weightlifting, in March 2016.
“It is high intensity workouts: box jump burpees, kettle bell swings, pull ups, clean and jerk exercises ... You need to work as hard and as fast as you possibly can for a certain time.
“It is mentally fatiguing, it is a very big mental challenge to keep pushing yourself, but it is extremely rewarding when you finish your workout,” she said.
Haylee is now training for upcoming CrossFit competitions in Canberra, Melbourne and online, but her main focus is the worldwide CrossFit Games Open in 2018.
She is also planning to undertake a Level 1 CrossFit certification to gain be an official CrossFit coach.
“I’m really looking forward to seeing how far I can go in this sport as there is nothing like a challenge,” Haylee said.
