The Forbes Platypi will run out in Batman and Robin jumpers when they take on the Mudgee Wombats on Saturday.
All jerseys will be auctioned off after the game with proceeds going to Long Walk for Lungs and numerous other local charities.
“We pioneered the concept of the themed jerseys,” first grade manager Phil Prior said this week.
“No other club is doing this.”
The club is hoping to raise between $13,000 and $14,000 from the auction of the two sets of jerseys at the rugby club house after Saturday’s game.
Club President Tracey Prior said the Rugby Club’s annual Charity Day was an opportunity for them to give back to their supporters.
“We want to give back to the community who give so much to us.
“The day is also for players, it’s an opportunity for them to raise funds for good charities and for the players to know that they’re apart of a club that gives back to their local community,” she said.
“We really want to say thank you by giving back and educating players that we couldn’t do it without local community sponsors.”
Long Walk for Lungs eventuated as a result of AGnVet Servics, Bill Van Nierop being diagnosed with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IBP) in 2015.
Van Nierop has had a long association with Forbes Rugby. He was state manager of Cropcare during the 1990s.
The Long Walk for Lungs will commence in Narromine on August 14 and will follow a 697km route through Central Western NSW passing through Trundle, Condobolin, Lake Cargelligo, Griffith, Leeton, Weethale, Barellan, West Wyalong and finishing in Forbes.
With his diagnosis, Van Nierop has become determined to work with Lung Foundation Australia to raise awareness of this devastating disease as well as symptoms of lung disease so that people can be diagnosed and treated earlier.
Lung Foundation Australia is the only national charity dedicated to supporting anyone with a lung disease.
JOB UNFINISHED
This weekend the Platypi take on a struggling Mudgee Wombats in the club’s quest to go one better than last year and take out the Blowes Cup premiership.
“A lot of blokes thought it was unfinished business last year and have turned out for the club again,” Phil Prior said.
“And obviously Matt Coles returning from the UK has strengthened the club as well,” he said.
Forbes Rugby Union Club will hold their annual Charity Day on Saturday July 22 with Colts kicking off at 12:45pm.
The jersey auction will be held at the club house following Saturday’s games.
