On Saturday the Men’s comp was the 18-hole Monthly Medal, sponsored by Robbs Jewellers. Some of the field of 50 players sparkled in the play and enjoyed some golden moments, while others kept their swings to clockwork precision.

The A grade winner was Mark Collits with 70 nett. An even par front nine, with a tidy back nine despite a blemish on the 15th, all helped by two birdies ensured Mark was a happy chappie. Runner-up was Terry Griffiths, with 73 nett.
The B grade, Alby Callaghan treated his playing partners to some wonderful shots, coming home with nett 73 which included two two’s. Earlier in the day Paul Pymont also enjoyed the sun and regaled his partners with some fine steady stroke play.
The C grade was won by Greg Webb has relished getting back onto the course and playing sufficiently well to allow the ‘muscle memory’ to help him along. His nett 70 was good, but could have been better without a nine on the 15th. In Runner-up was another new player. Stephen McAlister managed a very tidy 75 nett, getting the spot on count back.
The ball sweep went to 76 nett, going to: 70 – M Collits, G Webb; 73 – T Griffiths, A Callaghan; 74 – Paul Pymont, D Churchill, N McMillan; 75 – S Uphill, I Bown, B Carpenter, S McAlister, R Smith; 76 – A Rees. There were three visitors, all from St George’s Basin. Garry Druett, Ken Rankin and Dave Durant represented across all the grades and played well.
The NTP’s went to: Ninth – S Betland; 18th – M Collits. Both got their twos, although it would have been a shock if Steve had missed. He was only six inches short of a hole-in-one. In all there were eight twos, with the ‘Birdie Prince’ nabbing three. This week the Golfie meat tray went to Peter Barnes.
Despite the good weather it must have been tough out there. Overall the scores were either real good or real bad. While the place-getters had a great day, there were many who seemed to be trialling for the Australian Cricket team. Ray Taylor did a ‘Warnie’, while Michael Browne put in a good knock. Many of the C-graders also held the bat aloft.
Pete Cowhan had a two foot putt on the 13th to win the hole, but missed by at least eight inches. The Birdie Prince’s eight on the seventh hole split two pars, but fell short of Dan Bayley’s nine on the 17th hole, which is a hole he often birdies. We shall just quietly mention Phil Maher’s ten on the fourth.
Craig Barrett struggled on the 15th and Niel Duncan is going to give the seventh a miss from now on. Unfortunately, Bruce Squires did not win the prize for most shots lost in two holes, despite his pair of nines. But I won’t tell you who did win the prize. And just think how much Greg Webb’s score would have looked without the nine on the 15th.
The Stableford Medley on Sunday was enjoyed by a small band of loyal ‘medleyers’, with many players away at other events. This week Ron Morris, on 38 points, snuck ahead of Ray Taylor with his 37 points. Ray had a real reversal of form from Saturday’s game, but Ron was much sharper overall. There was no ball sweep. The NTP’s were: Ninth – R Morris; 18th – nil. Ray got the only twos of the day.
Here is the News: The ‘Winter 3’s’ competition only has three weeks to go. The lead team is still ‘Taylor’s Terrors’ but the gap to second has closed a little. The winner this week was Julie Hurkett with 32.5 nett. On her heels were Mary Ewings, Barb Drabsch and Ken Sly, all on 33 points.
The Wallace Cup draw progressing, with all Round 1 games finalised and some Round 2 games completed. Big wins seem to be common with Laurie O’Connor downing Peter Barnes by 5/4. Meanwhile, the B-Grade Champion has his sights set on ‘The Cup’ accounting for Bruce Chandler 4/3. We should see current Wallace Cup champion, Dan Bayley, in action soon. The Sand/Grass Green Championships, being held at Grenfell and Forbes Golf Courses on August 19-20, are getting closer. GolfNSW will accept late entries, but you can always contact the Forbes Pro Shop (6851 1554) or Grenfell Club (6243 1634) if you want to get in.
Forbes was well represented at the Lachlan Valley four ball Keno Par at West Wyalong on Sunday. All reported a good day. Off to Bonville are West Wyalong members, the father and son combination of Robert and Chris Fealy who scored a remarkable plus 12. Best from our club were Fed Collie and Barry Shine with plus five, equal fourth but a long way from the winners. Scratch winners for the Lachlan Valley four ball title were Barry Duncan and Paul Redman (West Wyalong) with 76 off the stick.
Players also ventured to Temora on Sunday for their Open. The event was won by a Wagga player, with a plus two score of 73. Tied in second place on plus three were John Betland and two others. The Men’s programme has a change. The Monthly Medal for September will be held on Saturday, September 9, and not on Saturday, September 2 which will be a Stableford event.
It is crystal ball time: Saturday, August 12 is the Annual ‘Righties versus Lefties’ Day. This is a Stableford event, with much at stake. The Stableford Medley will be on August 13, as is the Trundle Open. Saturday, August 19 and Sunday, August 20 is the Sand Grass Green championships. A Stableford event will be held at Forbes on Saturday for those who cannot participate at Grenfell.

Indoor bowls
What a mixed up lot they were Monday night, no one knew what position they were playing – must have been the weather. On the fourth and no one wanted to play on the mat as nearly every bowl went off. Then on the fifth end Possum’s team gained five points and never looked back, which made Squirt very frustrated. Finally Squirt’s team get a thrashing after three weeks of wins. The Old Fox played really well, the holiday must have done him good. Speedy settled down and played well as did Melody. Winners with huge grins were Heather, Kingsley, Sandy and Wendy with 27 points. Runners up Brendan, Connie, Ian and John with 13 points. Bowls Monday nights at Forbes Sports and Rec Club, names in by 6pm for 6.15pm start.
