Local Rural Fire Service district officer Cameron Bird is in Canada this month as part of an Australian contingent assisting with the current wildfire emergency.

Mid Lachlan Valley Superintendent Ken Neville said Cameron would be a sector leader in Canada, looking after troops on the ground.

He said the fires were in steep and rough terrain – the Australians had also been briefed on the hazards of the native wildlife.

Hundreds of wildfires have burned out more than 600,000 hectares in British Columbia and forced tens of thousands of people from their homes in the past month.

A state of emergency was declared a month ago and Australian resources are amongst those sent to help.

At this stage Cameron is the only local involved, but volunteers may be called on.

Cameron joined the Mid Lachlan Valley RFS team about 12 months ago and works in community safety, education and bushfire risk mitigation as well as operational activities in his role here.
