Forensic doctor IdaBagusPutu Alit said 27-year-old Australian woman SophiaFlorellaMartini was taken toSanglahmorgue at 2.30am on September 18.

"She was already dead on arrival," Dr Ida said.

"We did a preliminary examination, she had an open wound to her lower limbs and broken shin bones. There were cuts, especially around the face."

Dr Ida said there was no official cause of death yet, with a full autopsy pending family approval.

Denpasar traffic police chiefRahmawatiIsmail said the woman had been killed in an "out of control" accident.

"They hit a no parking sign, Sophia on the passenger seat was thrown away and died on the scene, it happened 1am," he said.

Chief Ismail said the driver has been named a suspect, but he had not been detained.

"We asked that he made himself available if we need him for further questioning," he said.

"The case is still being processed."

Chief Ismail said Ms Martini's mother had requested no charges be laid.

"There's a request from the mother of the victim, that they both were in a relationship, so the mother asked her body to be returned to Australia and will not seek further on the case," he said.

A Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade spokeswoman confirmed it was providing consular assistance to the family of a woman who died in a traffic accident in Bali and a man detained after the accident.

"For privacy reasons we are unable to provide further details," she said.

Earlier, Nine News reported a 27-year-old woman died in hospital early Monday morning after being involved in a scooter crash in Kuta in Bali's south.

It is understood the boyfriend was detained by local police for questioning and later released but prevented from leaving Bali while the incident was being investigated.
