VETS GOLF
Grenfell played host to Lachlan Valley veteran golfers last Thursday where most left happy with hospitality shown while some where not so due to the challenge of playing sand greens on a sloping and testing course.
President of Forbes and LVVGA, Peter Barnes gave full credit to the energetic but small committee for putting on such a successful day.
“The course was presented in good shape, although not too much run while the greens were well sanded. Conditions were a bit hot and dry, however in the club after we were well catered for,” Peter said.
Grenfell players dominated the two grades contested with Keith Cartman taking A grade with 39 points while club-mate John Grant took out B grade on 37 points.
Runner-up in A grade was Barrie Toms from Condobolin with 36 points while in B grade it was Forbes ace Ross Williams also on 36 points.
Nearest the pins on both the 9th and 18th holes. A grade, Keith Cartman and Joe Davies (Parkes). B grade Peter Grayson (Forbes) and Leanne Young (Grenfell).
Ball sweep winners (t/t only) all from Forbes as no Parkes player had a collect. 34 points Peter Barnes and Alex Mackinnon, 33 Allen Rees, Niel Duncan and Ted Morgan, 31 Don McKeowen.
In the LV Shield Grenfell came out on top with 108 points from their best three scores out of 13 representatives followed by Forbes (15 reps) for 104 points, Condobolin (5) 100 points, West Wyalong (4) 96, Parkes (4) 77 then Cowra (2) 63.
This Thursday Forbes will play host to players from Forbes and Parkes in the weekly twin-towns 18 hole comp. Noms from 9.30am for a 10am shot gun start.
Forbes vets have unearthed a course designer with Ken Sanderson laying out 12 holes of competition for Tuesday social golfers of 1-3, then 17-18, followed by 10-12 to finish 6-9.
The new lay-out was well received by all, none more so then our in-form president, Peter Barnes winning with 26 points from holiday ‘boy’ Dennis McGroder by one point.
Last week pleasing to see 14 taking part and why not, for only a ‘comp fee’ of $3 you get to play with ‘different’ talents in a social atmosphere after ball toss at 9am.
Our progressive president Peter advises that all who ordered vets golf t-shirts he now has them in stock. Word has it those who wore them at Grenfell last week received glowing comments from visiting club members.
Which makes you think, even if not playing the best at present at least you will look the goods. If not collected yet see president Peter now.
Forbes Ladies Golf
Last week saw a couple of competitions that required players to pair up and hopefully combine well for a good score.
The Wednesday comp was a 4BBB Multiplier in which all players played a stableford round and after each hole the stableford points for the pair were multiplied together.
There were many a good score, when both partners had good individual scores and some very disappointing scores when a zero popped up.
There were numerous holes that scored more than 8 points per hole.
Winners with a great score were Lindy Cowhan and Ann-Marie Gaffney with 70 points, not far behind were Jenny Fletcher and Debbie Tilley with 68.
Some pairs could not get it together at all and trailed far behind.
Jenny and Debbie along with Kate Steele-Park and Jenny Hubbard won balls. Kate Steele-Park took the NTP on the 9th and Meg Scholefield took the 18th converting it for a birdie and 5 points. Thankyou to the sponsors Julie Wood and Janet Smith.
Saturday’s event was a new one to the program.
The 4BBB Mulligan had players on their toes trying to plan the best time to use the 6 Mulligans that were available to each pair. Some used them all while others found they did not need to use them up after saving them for the latter part of each 9 holes.
There were some very good individual scores most unaided by the Mulligans. A fun event. Winners of the Wendy Simmons and Sharon Grierson sponsored event were Carolyn and Brianna Duncan with 49 points one point ahead of Sarah Black and Heather Davidson on 48 points.
Sarah and Heather and Veronica Rebellato and Ann Simmons won balls. NTP’s went to Lindy Cowhan on the 9th and Sharon Grierson on the 18th.
Well done to Jenny Fletcher for winning the Super pin with a shot to 60cm.
Ev Uphill and Heather Davidson travelled to Grenfell for their Ladies Tournament on Sunday. It was a two person Ambrose Event. They did not have any success but it was an enjoyable day.
The sand greens took a while to get used to and the bounces on the fairways were unpredictable.
In the dry conditions the kangaroos are playing havoc, digging holes and generally just messing the course up. The volunteers are doing a great job keeping it playable.
This Saturday (Easter Saturday) there will be an Individual Stableford Event in one Division, for anyone who wants a game. Medleys on the other days.
Next Wednesday is an Individual Stableford sponsored by Acheson’s Mitre 10 in 2 Divisions.
Forbes Ladies Tournament is on Saturday, May 3 4BBB and Sunday, May 4 Individual Events.
Bathurst Ladies Tournament is on May 5 to 7 and Forbes “Vets Week of Golf” is on May 5 to 9.
