Special guest for Men's Probus

The Cowra Men's Probus had their monthly meeting at the Masonic Hall on Tuesday 7 October.

During the meeting reminders were given about upcoming events which included a morning tea at Garry and Pam McKay’s home which included a walk around their lovely garden, trips to Norfolk Island, Jindabyne and the Christmas Party to be at the Bowling Club on 11 December.

The guest speaker for the morning was Graham Apthorpe, who spoke about his trip of River Cruising and Eastern Europe.

His tour commenced in Amsterdam where he saw the Anne Frank memorial and there were plaques on houses within the city which signified homes that had been owned by Jewish people who were taken by the Germans during the war.

Of the 107,000 people transported only 5000 survived.

The river cruise included going to Nuremberg and seeing the site of the trials after the war.

The tour finished at Budapest and then he transferred to a road tour of the eastern European Countries visiting many countries but with particular attention to the German Concentration Camps at Auschwitz and Birkenau.

Graham described the method that the Germans identified what was considered to be a Jew, with very detailed list which numbered more than 11 million in Europe.

He showed pictures from the archives set up in the museums at the former camps.

At the Auschwitz Information Centre, he mentioned that a continuous recording plays the names of every individual who was killed there

After a subdued question time Graham was presented with a memento of his talk by member Tony Smith.
