HE Silos’ Thermal Insect Control System® (TICS®) for silos was recognised on Friday night at the regional awards ceremony.
The system removes the need to climb the silo to fumigate it, eliminating a major safety issue, managing director Steven Morrison said.
It uses thermal energy - from ultra violet light - to activate the fumigation tablets.
The idea was also birthed of another clear need Mr Morrison saw in the industry - a need to help farmers increase their productivity and their bottom line.
“Farmers have got to be able to produce twice as much grain as they do now to feed the projected population by 2050,” Mr Morrison said.
“That’s a big shift. The need is about farmers storing and maintaining their own grain - pest-free and good quality - to get the best return for their grain.”
Operations manager Larry Storm said that farmers currently lose about 10 per cent of stored grain to insect damage.
“We are about designing out inherent safety issues, making farmers’ work safer, easier and better,” Mr Storm said.
HE Silos is a family company, run by Steven and wife Jenny in keeping with what Steven’s parents Ivan and Patsy Morrison established in 1969.
In recent years they have invested heavily in research and innovation, getting the right team to take the business to the next level.
The next generation in Stevie-Leigh and Joshua have joined the business as well.
HE Silos now has 35 staff in logistics, production, engineering, sales and administration and the Morrisons stress that it’s the whole team that make the business a success.
They cover the east coast of Australia - delivering silos from South Australia to Northern Queensland.
Major projects range from the establishment of a flour mill at Warragamba and poultry farm, storing feed for 20,000 chickens, at Griffith.
HE Silos was also a finalist in Excellence in Business Ethics and Excellence in Business at the regional awards.
