Played in the lead-up to Manly’s thrilling 15-14, golden point win over the New Zealand Warriors at Perth on Saturday, NSW Country ran in 12 tries to the hosts’ none in the 60-point win.
It was the second consecutive game Aaron Watts’ NSW Country under-18 side displayed its full array of attacking genius after scoring a mammoth 70-0 victory over the North West Reds in a tour warm-up game last Monday, although most of the Reds side traveled over a day from the Pilbara region to take part in the contest.
Both games, the CRL has said, are being used as development tools for the league in Western Australia with the Reds training alongside their Country opposition after their clash last Monday night.
On Saturday in Perth, the visitors began the first half in style, racing in seven tries to secure a 36-0 lead by the half-time break.
The country kids then produced an inspirired second half defensive display to help keep the WA under-18 team scoreless while scoring a further five tries of their own.
Western’s large contingent in the side starred, with Magpies’ centre Andrews bagging a double, while Blayney's Lachie Farr, Cowra’s Rick Nobes, Dubbo’s Luke Gale and Parkes Spaceman Joey Dwyer all crossed for tries in the romp.
In the lead-up, NSW Country’s under-18s had the chance to speak with Manly star Daly Cherry-Evans during a training session and enjoyed some one-on-one coaching from one of the game’s best pivots.
The WA Open side won its clash with the NSW Country Bulls – a side picked from the Country Rugby League’s second tier championship – 22-12.
