Heading golf results for this week is the success of our Division 4 pennants team in the Central West District Association. Last Sunday they flew the club's flag with success in the semi finals at Cowra with a 3-2 win over Wellington.
Team manager Jim McLuckie reported that it was a nail biting win with the finish of Garry Pymont well worth noting.
“Garry was two down with three holes to play but showed his fighting spirit to win all three” Jim said.
Stuart French was the team's star player once again with a comfortable 7-5 win while the big hitting Gus Coles scored a 2-1 victory to see the home side into the final. Troy Howe battled hard before going down 3-2 with the team's No 1 player Richard Smith finding the opposition in form losing 4-3.
Jim reports that the five who played last Sunday will most likely represent in the final on Sunday at Orange's Ex-Services Club against Cowra. In case of emergencies, the fearless Frank Hanns is on stand-by. Other finals on Sunday will be Division 1 Dubbo versus Mudgee. Division 2 Mudgee versus Parkes. Division 3 Dubbo versus Cowra. Adding to the pennants success were two days of competition play here at home. In A grade Adam Borger (handicap 15) stole the show with an excellent score of 42 points from Brian Everest (12) who also played under his handicap for 39 points.
Newcomer Bede Tooth (27) will need to check his handicap after posting his best win to date in taking out B grade with 42 points from Geoff Drane (29) who conquered his demons of the back nine to score a well compiled 38 points.
Ball sweep to 35 points on a count-back. The above plus Tony Cogswell (38), Peter Jackson from Coffs Harbour (38), Alf Davies (37), Paul Pymont (36), Mark Collits (36), Ronald Morris (36), David Earl (35), Robert Webb (35), Bruce Carpenter (35), Richard Smith (35), Stuart French (35).
Nearest the pins; ninth Todd Callaghan, 18th Albie Callaghan.
The well organised Magpies Rugby League Club staged a highly successful four person Ambrose on Sunday with a full field of over 70 for the shot-gun start event. Former State of Origin player Phil Duke led the trio of Dan, David and Mitch Bayley to success in the scratch event with nine under par 63.
Best in handicap were current league players, Ethan Gaffney, Jake Grace, Nick Greenhalgh and Hayden Bolam with 52 nett.
Next best were Shayne Staines, Shane Bolam, Robert Dukes and John Gunn 53 nett; third Andrew Dukes, Garry Besgrove, Jim Dukes and Peter Cook 53.1/3; 4th Tass Spackman, John Reid, Jordie and Ricky Brett 55.
Bradman award went to Cathy Andrews, Jess Ruge, Ellie and Scott Reid with 87 nett. In a changed layout, nearest the pins, fourth Steve Uphill, ninth Ross Williams, 13th nil, 18th Peter Shannon.
Coming events: Friday, March 17, rugby lunch four person Ambrose with a shot-gun start at 1pm. Maximum handicaps, men 27, ladies 36. Saturday, 4BBB par sponsored by C and D Floor covering.
Saturday, March 25 rugby union Bali Memorial Day (formally Greg Sanderson Memorial). This event is the best supported day on the golfing calendar with well over 200 players each year. Nomination sheet is now up at the Pro Shop. Get your name down for the four person Medley Ambrose.
Sunday, March 26 Medley Stableford. Most importantly is Saturday, March 25 (the day of the Bali Memorial) which will also play host to Memorial Drinks in memory of one of the club's finest members, Brian Monaghan. Under the guidance of Ray Taylor all are invited to share a drink and chat in memory of Brian during a busy time in the hotel.
Brian's sister Sam and husband Brook Walker from Balmain will attend as will son Grant along with his wife Tracey and daughter Nadine with her children Liam and Kurt. Both families are from the Maitland area. While all are invited to attend for more contact Ray in the Pro Shop or by phone on 0432 406 913.
Golfers will have noticed well scheduled changes taking place around the course with old dead trees pulled down and ready for removal to dredging of tree roots along the edge of fairways.
One of the biggest improvements is the construction of a new ninth tee, sure to be welcomed by all players.
Course curator Jack (Justin) Clarke only has a few staunch volunteers so if anyone can assist for an hour or two, half or full day, get in contact with him any time. Due to the extended dry spell the greens are taking 'a hit' and next week major renovations are planned. So again if you can help in any way contact Jack for what is on the agenda.
Resident golf club professional Daniel (Newton) spread his wings to take on golf services in Parkes, and for most of us a positive in many ways. A stronger junior program, more equipment and better deals are just the starter.
One addition which we hope gets off the ground is a re-vamp of the Twin Towns. The sooner both clubs support each other the better, and this goes for all categories of golf.
While Marg (Hurst) is being missed at the Pro Shop expect the best of services from Julie Hurkett who joins Ray as Daniel's assistant.
New from the Pro Shop is the On-Par Website which is up and running. Also new is the junior program and raffle of a Taylormade M2 set of junior clubs. On juniors, book now for the school holiday camp on April 10-12. Modified rules with tee off from 4pm.
Dates: Vets Week of Golf, May 8-12; Forbes Open and NSW Open Pre-Qualifying, May 13-14; Legends Pro-Am, May 19. For information call Pro Shop 6851 1554. Good luck to out No 4 pennants team on Sunday.
