As the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games approaches, six-time Commonwealth Games shooter and Forbes farmer Phillip Adams is reflecting on his sporting shooters career.

The 71-year-old will have a meeting room named in his honour at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games Organising Corporation headquarters for next year’s sporting event.
The Queen’s Baton Relay will travel through Forbes on January 29, 2018, on it’s journey to the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games, held between April 4-15 next year.
Phillip represented Australia at the 1982, 1986, 1990, 1994, 1998 and 2002 Commonwealth Games – the most number of Games by an Australian athlete.
He holds the Australian record for most medals won by a competitor capturing 18 medals – seven gold, nine silver and two bronze.
Adams says his key to success was determination, discipline and mental skills when competing in the Commonwealth and Olympic Games.
“Focus on the end goal.
You have got to decide what you want and you focus on it until you get there,” he said.
“You are taking on the rest of the world – you have got to work out how to do it and control your emotions, not get sidelined by the enormity of the event.”
The Games will be the biggest sports event held in Australia this decade and will be attended by more than 6,600 athletes and team officials from 70 Commonwealth countries and territories.
The Games will be viewed to a cumulative worldwide audience of 1.5 billion.
“It’s about organising yourself and having achievable goals at the reel.”
“Learning how to write down the steps so you end up where you want to be.
“I just do my own thing. I just focus on what I’m doing,” Phillip said.
Carry the Baton
There will be approximately 3,800 batonbearers selected to participate in the GC2018 Queen’s Baton Relay throughout Australia.
Batonbearers will come from a wide cross section of people selected from nominations received through programs including the Community Batonbearer Nomination Program, the Queensland Schools’ Batonbearer Nomination Program, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Batonbearer Nomination Program, GC2018 Sponsor Family Program, high profile personalities and the Commonwealth Games Australia (CGA) Batonbearer Nomination Program.
Nominated by their peers for achievements and contributions to their community, a Batonbearer has the honour of carrying the Queen’s Baton and representing their family, friends and community with pride as it passes through Forbes.
Successful batonbearers will be announced to the public in late October 2017.
