Veterans’ golf
Forbes veteran golfers recorded the largest the number of representatives in the field of 62 which played the monthly 18 hole Lachlan Valley tournament in Cowra last Thursday. Cowra was well presented with plenty of grass all over while the greens were 'friendly' being on the slower side compared to what is being superbly presented here in Forbes. Our A-grade players relished the conditions with Max Haley stating he has never hit the ball better in recent months to top score with 43 points, three from Richard Nixon who faltered slightly towards the end of a very solid round.
B-grade winner was Lester Black from Cowra with 41 points, runner-up Richard Hamilton from Parkes with 37 on a countback. Cowra representative Colin Ridding won C grade with 42 points from Ron Newham of West Wyalong runner-up with 36 on a count-back. Max Haley was top qualifier in the NSW Veterans Medal for 2018 from Colin Ridding and Lester Black.
Nearest the pins, 5th L Rogan (Pks), 7th M Dwyer (Pks), 14th M Haley (Fbs).
Ball sweep, 37 points L Ryan (Cwa), R Smith (Pks), 36 C Allen (Pks), P Kimber (W/W), R Baker (Fbs), 35 K Lindsay (W/W), J Murphy (Cwa), H Tawant (Cwa), 34 R Cartwright (W/W), J Pearce (Pks), D Withers (Cwa), 33 R Luyt (Pks), C Clark (W/W), J Webster (Cwa), D Stait (Pks), J Haley (Fbs), P Kay (Fbs), D Thomas (W/W), S Simpson (Pks), I Phipps (Pks), D Spalding (Cwa).
In the Coles/Miller Shield, Cowra 120 points, Forbes 119, Parkes 110, West Wyalong 102, Grenfell 29, Condobolin 0.
Forbes/Parkes vets play their weekly 12 hole competition on Thursday in Parkes with noms from 12.30am for a 10am tee-off.
Last week Cheating Tuesday welcomed three visitors, from Gundagai, Coolangatta and South Australia. They made up the field of 20 who enjoyed playing a course which was being set up for the final two rounds of the championships, hence very fast, but true, greens. Two regulars fought out the finish with Frank Donohue on top with 29 points on a count-back from Barry Parker. Ball toss at 9am today for playing partners in Cheating Tuesday. Veteran golfers are reminded that the Nissan Classic is for all players, and that veteran trophies are decided by nett scores, not off the stick. That way all players are equal before a ball is hit.
Croquet
Croquet again was played under warmer conditions both days although a little chilly start on Saturday. We had a good attendance on both days which was pleasing to see and maybe the warmer weather has enticed people to come out earlier.
October 17: Congratulations go to John H Browne, Joan Littlejohn and Tony Thomson on attaining three wins in all their three games and on Saturday last congratulations to John H Browne John Cole Bruce Field and Kevin Rubie also on winning all three games. On Saturday it was lovely to see John MacCullagh back playing after a few weeks away with his wife Veva whilst she has been in hospital. A warm welcome home both to John and Veva. Veva is on the improve. Hope it will not be long until we see Veva coming to join us at croquet again.
It was great to welcome Colleen Clifton on Saturday for a game and hopefully she enjoyed the company and the game and we hope to see her on a regular basis.
