Sherrie Whitty captured this awesome photo of lightning and fire looking toward Grenfell on Saturday night.
The Rural Fire Service confirmed a fire sparked by lightning had been reported in the Garema area, but it was quickly extinguished by the rain that followed.
For the district’s winter cereal croppers, it’s now a race against the weather to get the 2017 harvest in.
Walkers AGnVET agronomist Campbell Wilson said while it had been a tough season – extremely dry with frosts at key times - some growers had been pleasantly surprised when they actually started harvesting.
“As far as wheat goes, we’ve been pretty surprised by what’s there and the quality of it,” he said.
With varied rainfall across the area – the airport measured 5mm on Sunday night while Mr Wilson’s South Condobolin Road property measured 16mm – many headers had to stop.
Everyone is at different stages of harvesting, there are growers who have just about finished while others have hardly started.
With a chance of showers throughout this week and heavier falls at this stage slated for next weekend, Mr Wilson said farmers would be eager to get crops off this week.
As of Monday afternoon, Weatherzone forecast a 70 per cent chance of 5-10mm rain Thursday; an 80 per cent chance of 20-40 mm rain on Friday and a 90 per cent chance of another 10-20mm rain on Saturday.
