Plan B is a statewide initiative encouraging punters to think about an alternative to driving home after a night out.
Drink driving is one of the biggest causes of death and injury on NSW roads. Country people are at particular risk given the lack of public transport or other options for getting home.
In the western region between 2012 and 2016, there were 362 casualty crashes where alcohol was a contributing factor. These crashes resulted in 34 deaths, 209 serious injuries and 222 people with moderate or minor injuries.
During December, patrons at participating pubs and clubs will be able to enter a competition to win a swag valued at $250 by nominating a Plan B for getting home.
Road Safety and Injury Prevention Officer, Melanie Suitor said, “Every entry puts patrons in the running to win a swag valued at $250 - there is one available at every pub and club in Parkes, Forbes and Condobolin - 26 venues in total. The competition is drawn on Christmas Eve.”
Local radio station ROK-FM will be giving away Plan B packs on air - which include a $20 taxi voucher, a t-shirt, a standard drink glass and fridge magnet photo frame. All the winners will go into the draw to win a swag drawn on Friday December 22.
The promotion coincides with an increase in Police RBTs across the state making it even more likely that anyone drink driving will get caught.
Ms Suitor said, “The best advice for anyone planning a night out is to leave the car at home. That way there’s no temptation to try and drive home.”
In NSW, drink-driving is a criminal offence, which can result in hefty fines, licence disqualification and/or custodial sentences.
