That’s the message from Havannah House as they organise a Christmas Day lunch and celebration for a couple of hundred people.
The team is once again planning a traditional Christmas lunch, to be hosted at Town Hall thanks to a team of volunteers and community generosity.
And they welcome community members for whom the day looks lonely or bleak to join the celebrations.
“We don’t care if you have a million dollars or one in the bank, we don’t want people to spend the day alone,” organisers George and Ruth Barnes said.
“If your plans fall through at the last minute, if you’re not up to making Christmas lunch for one or two people, you’re still welcome.”
This year the group will be treated to carols with James Whalan and Maddi Collits, performing at the event for the first time.
There are Christmas gifts for everyone, a craft table and kids corner.
There will be a photo booth for anyone who would like to have a family photo taken, they’ll be printed and distributed on the day.
Volunteers will be heading out to take lunch to those who have to work including motels and service stations.
Organisers have been heartened by the support for the event.
“We are so lucky with the businesses and families that give donations of money, food and toys that enable us to do this so generously,” the Barnes said.
“And it’s mind-blowing that we are getting new volunteers, and younger volunteers coming with their families.”
They have also been touched by the donation of gifts, with parents phoning to coordinate donations.
“Their kids are picking a gift for other kids at Christmas, understanding that Christmas is about giving as well as receiving,” George said.
About 300 people attended last year’s Christmas lunch including volunteers.
Organisers rated it as one of the best in the event’s history and hope the tradition will continue to grow and create many wonderful, happy Christmas memories for more people.
