The Men’s Shed was one of three local groups named in Monday’s announcement of the fund, and members were delighted with the announcement.
A purpose-built shed has been the members’ desire since the Forbes branch formed just over 10 years ago.
Their campaign “shifted into top gear” in about 2012 and a donation from one member that enabled the purchase of land in Union Street galvanised plans.
Men’s Shed president Norm Haley thanked past and present members, Forbes Shire Council and the NSW Government fund for bringing it closer to a reality.
Early Shed members, the late Ken Reid, Hilton Ellis and John Reynolds, had a key role to play.
Community members have also backed the shed’s plans, with many small donations over the years.
There is now only a small part of the development application still to be completed before the construction certificate can be signed and work on the site can start.
“All the members are very, very pleased that we are at this stage and are excited for things to happen,” he said.
Forbes Shire Council is also celebrating.
“The Forbes Men’s Shed is vital in our community and these new funds will allow the group to greatly expand,” Mayor Graeme Miller said.
“Specialised skills based groups will be able to meet and the new facility will enable the group to work with younger and disadvantaged men.”
