Last Monday, school students helped release about 4000 Golden Perch – also known as Yellowbelly - at several sites around Forbes, including Cotton’s Weir and Red Bend.
Members of Fish Care raised money to help fund the purchase of the native fish from licensed commercial hatcheries in NSW through a raffle of an Engel fridge full of lures.
There were several groups which helped run this raffle including Calarie Fishing Club, Blue Sky Outdoor and Loomzy’s Fish N Fix.
On April 17, a further 10,000 Golden Perch are set to be released into the Lachlan at various locations between Cowra and Condobolin.
The Department of Primary Industries says the increase of the native fish will enhance recreational freshwater fishing opportunities and support local communities in stocking high value native fish species, with the possibility of boosting tourism.
