As one of four sides with two wins and two losses out of the opening month of the Group 11 season, Forbes coach Cameron Greenhalgh knows skipping ahead of the pack and embedding the Magpies in the 2018 top five is key for his side’s finals aspirations.

As with anything, though, that’s a lot easier said than done.
Forbes travels to Wellington on Sunday to tackle another side with a 2-2 record in the form of the Cowboys and, with Aidan Ryan’s side reeling on the back of two-straight losses, Greenhalgh knows there won’t be any favours afforded at Kennard Park.
His approach against one of the best attacking outfits in the comp?
“Keep the ball of them as much as we can,” he said.
“We’ve got points in us, so we’ll be playing attacking footy ourselves, but we’ll try and keep some free-flowing footy up for long periods to starve them of the ball.”
Greenhalgh’s approach is measured, considering the Magpies came up against Wellington in a trial and suffered a pretty bad 38-0 loss in that pre-season game.
It contributed to a start to the regular season Greenhalgh admits has been “slow by our standards” and catching fire against the Cowboys will help lift Forbes back towards the top of the ladder, where an undefeated Dubbo CYMS side sits ahead of a Parkes outfit with just the one loss to date in 2018.
“We’ve had a good look at Wellington, there’s not many weaknesses there,” Greenhalgh concedes.
“But our main focus is on how we want to play, we’re not quite doing that at the moment but we’re building into it.
“We’re strong through the middle and teams have identified that, so hopefully we can play some attacking footy this weekend.”
Forbes takes on Wellington in round five of the Group 11 season on Sunday at Kennard Park.
