The anticipation of central Orange being a sea of white – whipped up by a seven-day forecast predicting snow down to an altitude of 600 metres (Orange’s altitude is 863 metres) – amounted to little on Sunday, with little snow settling on the ground within the city limits.
But there was significant coverage to the south and east of Orange, especially on and near Mount Canobolas.
The Pinnacle was, as always, a popular spot for snow seekers, with snowmen and sleds littering the mountainside.
Around the Central West, the are around Oberon and Shooters Hill received the biggest snow dump, but it came at something of a cost.
Roads between Oberon and Bathurst were closed on Sunday morning, while the Central Western Daily’s Nick McGrath reported that all Group 10 matches have been called off due to inclement weather across the region.
The heavy snow also prompted a warning for motorists to drive with caution and be wary of black ice.
According to www.weatherzone.com.au there may be further snow on the way later on Sunday.
There is a “chance of showers, most likely late this afternoon and evening” with “snow possible above 700 metres”, according to the forecaster.
Cabonne Council advises that access to the summit of Mount Canobolas remains closed.
