George Hoad spoke in Forbes, to members of 11 clubs from around the region, at a special luncheon.
The national president, who comes from Killabakh near Wingham where he has his own six acre garden, explained some of the history and the reach of the Garden Clubs of Australia.
“There are 750 affiliate clubs and about 50,000 members, “ he said.
“We’re part of a very big gardening family.”
Mr Hoad was thoroughly enjoying a 10-day trip that also took in events in Narrandera and Wagga Wagga, meeting with garden club members.
He shared photographs of some of the most inspirational gardens he has visited and finished up with some images of the spectacular Chelsea Flower Show.
But George Hoad isn’t only a passionate gardener, his background is in theatre as an entertainer and he wound up the afternoon with a medley of Vera Lynn songs that delighted the audience.
Forbes Horticultural Society and Garden Club president Tuppy Drabsch said the members had had an excellent afternoon, enjoying the presentation, company and meal at the Forbes Services Memorial Club.
Members brought along antiques and collectibles, ranging from old photographs and homewares to tools, to create a very interesting table display.
Garden enthusiasts came from as far away from Nyngan for the event and all enjoyed it immensely.
The garden club next meets in July.
