Meerkat-lovers and zookeepers around Australia have embraced the #sentryselfie hashtag as they celebrated the first World Meerkat Day on Tuesday.
The day was created by Dubbo zookeeper Karen James, who has been working with the animals at Taronga Western Plains Zoo for more than six years.
“It’s been super exciting! We’ve had some zoo friends come out just because they heard it was World Meerkat Day, there’s been heaps of pictures on social media from around the world … and the meerkats have got some extra treats today,” she said.
“Meerkats are always a favourite but it’s just exciting to see word has gotten out … the [keeper] talk, I probably got asked about 50 extra questions today!”
Zoo director Steve Hinks said he was “so proud” of Ms James for her efforts.
“What she has done is completely above and beyond her role and it shows the level of passion and commitment not just from Karen, but all of our keepers,” he said.
“Their love of our animals is inspiring.”
