Central West Lachlan Landcare (CWLL) were pleased to partner with Forbes Shire Council, The Forbes Wiradjuri Dreaming Centre, Planet Ark and Toyota to run Forbes National Tree Day on Saturday, July 28. For our third year of running Tree Day in Forbes, we were excited to have over 30 volunteers working on planting, staking, watering and mulching at the Wiradjuri Dreaming Centre in Forbes, located on the banks of Lake Forbes. This year’s planting will increase the aesthetics and ‘green space’ at the Cultural Centre.

The community also had the opportunity to check out the newly completed ‘Hub’ that has been built onsite, which will enable cultural workshops, meetings and many more exciting activities to take place on site. We look forward to seeing the future improvements on site and being able to be involved in future undertakings at the Hub. It was lovely to be working with the Dreaming Centre volunteers leading up to and during the event. They can cook a mean sausage!

As with any respectable National Tree Day Event, when the planting was complete, volunteers enjoyed a sausage sandwich and had a chance to catch up and reflect on the work completed, with approximately 100 trees and shrubs being planted, mulched and watered.

I am particularly grateful to Andrew Rawsthorne for volunteering his time to assist with site preparation Obviously the area was still dry, which required some reasonable preparation work to be undertaken prior to the event. We chose this year’s sites with close access to water to allow for the best possible chances of survival and follow up watering will be undertaken by the Dreaming Centre volunteers.

Toyota provide shirts and gloves for the day, which come in handy all year round, not just on National Tree Day!
