Winner of Division 1 was Heather Davidson with a nett 69, whilst Janet Smith was the runner-up with a nett 72.

Barb Drabsch was the winner of Division 2 with a nett 71 closely followed by Jill Cripps with a nett 72 as the runner-up. Ball Sweep went to Heather Davidson, Janet Smith, Barb Drabsch and Jill Cripps to  72.

The best putter on the day was Judy Hodge with 30 putts on a countback from two other players. NTP on the ninth was Janet Smith and on the 18^th Barb Drabsch. Monthly Medal winners were Division 1 Heather Davidson, Division 2 Janet Smith and Division 3 Barb Drabsch.

The weather on Wednesday August 8 was not as kind as the weekend with a cool wind keeping everyone rugged up. Despite the cold there were many good scores recorded. There were reports of numerous gobbles and some birdies being made.

The event was also an 18 hole stroke event sponsored by Myra Gunn in two divisions. It was the last qualifying round for the mid-week Golf NSW Medal.

Division 1 winner was Ethel Coombs with a superb 67 nett. Not far behind was Colleen Venables with 69 nett another great score.

Division 2 winner was Debbie Dingwall with 72 nett with Jill Cripps being the runner-up with nett 74. Ball Sweep went to Ethel Coombs, Colleen Venables, Janet Smith and Kerry Stirling to nett 71. NTP went to E Coombs on the ninth and V Lane on the 18^th.

On Friday August 17, Colleen Bratton/Bess Shields and Colleen Venables/Marie Reid will be making the journey to Trangie to contest the finals of the WDLGA 4BBB. We wish them the best of luck on what is a very interesting course.

This Saturday August 11 is a 4BBB Stableford Medley. Next Wednesday August 15 is a four Ball Stableford Aggregate sponsored by Enid Baker and the Jelbart Family.  Sally Crosby is on cards. The blustery conditions last Friday ensured the golf course looked quite windswept and a little untidy in places. Saturday was the Monthly Medal, sponsored by Bernardis Marketplace. The field of 56 players wanted to grab a bargain on every hole and grab a bunch of good memories so they could register a win. 

The A grade winner was Paul Pymont who enjoyed quiet early morning conditions to finish with a nett 70. Runner up was Andrew Dukes finished with nett 72.

The B grade winner of the voucher was a visitor from St Georges Basin. Brian Druett found the course matched his play so that he was able to play under his handicap, scoring 68 nett. Runner up, and winner of the Monthly Medal, was Garry Collits with 70 nett.

The C graders were led by two fine gentleman in their pursuit of sub-par scores. The winner was Geoffrey Drane, who has been riding on the crest of a good form wave and slid onto the 19^th beach with a 70 nett. Close behind was Rod Besgrove, who recovered from an early eight to score steadily for his 71 nett.

The ball sweep went to 73 nett on count back, going to: 68 – G Druett; 70 – G Collits, P Pymont, G Drane, S Uphill; 71 – R Besgrove, B Thomas, R Webb; 72 – A Dukes; 73 – A Borger, B Tooth, P Kay, A Alley, N McMillan, B Carpenter.

The NTP’s went to: ninth – Brian Everest; 18^th – G Newport. They both missed their twos, and joined the rest of the field who also failed. No twos at all. We welcomed a group of golfers from St George’s Basin. Some of them joined the comp while others played socially, but they all enjoyed themselves, having been swept off the Cowra course on Friday afternoon.

Despite there being many of our top-line golfers away, the field did return good scoring generally, with more than half field within a couple of shots of par. And as always there was merriment to be told.

Some players will do anything to get new gear. Peter Barnes felt his driver was not working, none more so than on the 17^th tee when his tee shot veered sharply left towards the second fairway. However, his driver slipped from his grip and flew sharply right, nestling in the top branches of a tree near the tee. No manner of persuasion could get it down then, but it was retrieved, using a ‘fishing’ action, on Sunday morning. Bad luck Pete – no new driver.

In the realms of ‘what might have been’, Stephen Uphill scorched the front-nine, turning with a 37. But the back-nine got him, assisted by a four-putt on the 13^th and a missed birdie on the 15^th. Without those blemishes he would have raced in for the B grade Medal. Oh dear, what might have been.

In this sport repetition and consistency breeds good results. One group, playing as a five at the end of the field, managed nine tee shots on the 7th tee. Three players had a single shot each, and two players had three shots each. The culprits were easily identified as OB and those dammed wires.

Some players are not over-awed by our hazards. Niel Duncan put his second shot on 15 into the dry creek, but managed a clean recovery onto the green and just missed his birdie. Tom Edols is also not over-awed by them. He regularly puts his balls into the hazard, and they regularly come out. Mainly because while others are retrieving their balls they find Tom’s balls with his unmistakable markings.

Geoff Drane disregarded all hazards on the sixth, namely the trees, and scored a satisfying birdie there. He was ‘cock-a-hoop’ until the 9th when he needed three shots to escape the bunker. Perhaps he spoke too soon.

Warwick Judge presents a serene style of play. However, he did not need his warm jacket, as he encountered tree after tree after tree, which led to a gradual rising in his blood pressure. There is no truth to a sighting of Warwick walking back onto the course after his game, carrying a chainsaw.

There was no Stableford Medley played on Sunday. Instead the Club hosted the LCDGA Mens Keno 4BBB, with representation from Forbes, Parks, Grenfell and West Wyalong clubs.

There were 46 players, all looking to earn a spot to go to the State Keno 4BBB final to be held at Bonville in October. Despite the wind, there were some excellent Scratch and Handicap results.

The Handicap winners were the pairing of Richard Nixon and Niel Duncan. They seemed to be playing within themselves and were surprised to finish with +eight. Ralph Baker and Steve Grallelis were sitting comfortably in runner-up on +seven, until Andrew Dukes and Michael Spice, the last to come in, also had +seven and took runner-up on count back.

Parkes players took the clean sweep in the Scratch, with Mitch McGlashan and Zac Kelly coming first on +four (with 34:36-70 strokes) and Myles and Blake Smith runners-up on -two. Quite a gap there. But it was good to renew friendships from other clubs.

Here is the News: The Wallace Cup (Match Play on Handicap) has commenced with a couple of matches being completed to enable some second Round matches to be played. Use every opportunity to get your matches played, or expect a call from ‘The Captain’.

A contingent of players represented the club at the Temora Open on Sunday, August 5. There were mixed results overall. Unfortunately John Betland missed out on the big trophy, losing on the first play-off hole, after finishing four under the card. More details later.

The Sand Grass Greens Championships are scheduled for 18, 19 August. At the time of this report there was doubt as to whether it would be cancelled due to lack of nominations. Contact the Pro Shop to find out. On August 12 Trundle Open, Cowra Open and August 19 Condobolin Open.

Another Medallion draw was made, with happy winners enjoying the spoils. The next draw, of 100 Medallions, has already begun to sell, so get your lucky number now. The quicker we sell them the quicker it is drawn and the quicker we can make people happy.

Saturday, August 11 is a 4BBB Stableford Medley, playting for the Bob and Daine Doolin Memorial. On Sunday, August 12 is a Stableford Medley at home, with the Trundle and Cowra Opens also being played.
