The winning pair was Tom Edols and Milton Cartwright with 49 points. They combined well to use their handicaps and ensure they scored on every hole. No real “Yippee!” moments but good steady play. They shared the responsibility of scoring on each hole very well.
Runners-up were Rod Besgrove and Barb Drabsch with 48 points, on count back. They also meshed well like two well-oiled cogs, with their only partial blemish being a ‘paltry par’ on the seventh. This pairing also were equal sharers in the hole-scoring responsibilities.
An unlucky pair was G Newport and A Callghan. They performed very close to exceptional on the front-nine, but a stumble on the 17th with only one point, and that an almost miracle, brought the back-nine performance down a notch, causing them to miss out on the count back. No blame can be attached to either player.
The ball sweep went to 43 points on count back, going to: 49 – Edols/Cartwright; 48 – Besgrove/Drabsch, Newport/A Callaghan; 47 – F Hanns/L Little; 45 – S Black/L French, B Doyle/G Webb; 44 – T Griffiths/C Barrett, B Chandler/ G Drane; 43 – R Smith/ B Squires.
The NTP’s went to: ninth – Jenny Fletcher; 18th – Brian Doyle. Jenny missed her two but Brian was successful. There were only six twos across the field, with many players claiming their putts were blown off the line. There were no visitors.
The best Ladies pairing were Sarah Black and Louise French. They are enjoying competitive golf and looking to reduce their handicaps. They finished with 45 points, due to good team effort to score points on every hole.
Craig Barrett had an excellent finish to his round. He managed a chip in for par on the 16th hole and thus be the start of his group, enabling his team to win the ‘game money’ for the day. Mind you, his round did not start all that well. His ball seemed to gravitate towards the trees and nestle up against the butts, with the evidence clearly captured on the fourth fairway. Not even a chainsaw could help.
Peter Grayson started the day full of confidence, having putted like a dream on Friday, but he too feel to the ‘shaved hole’ syndrome on Saturday.
One player was spotted calling upon divine intervention to help his golf. Stevie G saw his approach shot to the 14th sail over the back. When he got there his ball was underneath a bush, and despite his small but athletic stature the only way he could play the shot was to get down on his knees. Unfortunately it did not help, sending his ball back over the green to the front.
Someone who wanted to pray was Brian Doyle. In his excitement to get to the first tee, he forgot to strap his bag onto the cart. The bag fell off, breaking his driver in the process. Luckily the cover was on the head and that was not scratched. He was hamstrung for his round, but did finish well on the 18th.
Hardships encountered on the course, Mark Watts found the lie on the practice fairway to be hard and unforgiving. Andrew McDonald claimed those who played after 11am had a mere breeze compared to the extreme winds he battled.
Stubby Collits claimed it was very difficult ‘on the course’, especially without any help from his partner. But I have yet to hear Ash’s side of the story. Ecky Dawson did well to battle by himself against Dan Bayley and Todd Callaghan, just missing the money by losing on the 12th hole.
Sunday was a slightly less windy day, eleven players ventured out to contest the Stableford Medley.
The winner was Toni Kilderry, a traveller who plays at Tooleybuc GC down along the Murray near Swan Hill. She was thrilled to play so well, scoring 36 points. Her golf has not been the best of late, but she really enjoyed the Forbes course.
Runner up was Julie Hurkett with 35 points. Julie was seen to ‘smote’ the ball well, but errors on the fourth, seventh and 15th were costly. Just as a note, claiming last spot was John Horn, also from Tooleybuc and companion of Toni. He was certainly pleased to receive encouragement, and has vowed to return and make amends for the damage to the trees.
The ball sweep went to 33 points, going to Ray Taylor and Rod Besgrove. The NTP’s went to: ninth – Bess Shields, with the 18th a clean slate.
Some players travelled to Cowra for their Saturday 4BBB and 27-Hole Open. The most successful of the Forbes players was Andrew Dukes. Firstly, the 27-hole Open winner was Chris Cole (Canberra) with two-over. His third-nine was a real blast of classy golf which turned a humdrum first-18 into a winning overall score.
On Saturday Andy teamed with Peter Kirwin (Cowra) to win the 4BBB Scratch, finishing one-under. Then on Sunday Andy took the A-grade 18-hole Handicap with a nett 69.
Another Forbes player to bring home a trophy was Shane Sallaway, who snaffled a NTP on one hole. But, it is ‘trophy’. Not only did players need to contend with cold conditions, but the flying foxes disturbed some shots.
Here is the News
Some matches in the Wallace Cup have produced excellent play. Brett Thomas was too strong for Bruce Chandler, winning 5/4. Ash Tucker battled well against Anthony Alley but was successful 3/2, as was Stevie G who accounted for a stronger Dave Rhodes 3/2. There are some good second round matches looming, when we see defending and past champions take to the field.
The Sand Grass Greens Championships are set for this weekend August 18-19. At the time of this report there were nearly 70 players registered, with more likely to appear ‘on the day’. It should be a good challenge for all participating. August 18 we have an 18-Hole Stableford at home while the Sand Grass Greens is played at Grenfell and August 19 is the SGG at Forbes. August 19 Condobolin Open. August 26 Peak Hill Open and September 15-16 Bermagui Ladies Open.
We shall be farewelling Club Pro Simon Houston and his family on Saturday, August 25, after the Saturday golf Presentations. So come down to the Golfie and wish them good fortune as they head to the Gold Coast. Simon’s final day will be August 29, so if you cannot make it drop into the Pro Shop and say your cheerio’s.”

Ladies Golf
Last Saturday’s event was a 4BBB Medley for the Bob and Daine Doolin Memorial Trophy. The results are in the men’s notes. Wednesday’s event was sponsored by Enid Baker and the Jelbart Family. It was a 4 Ball Stableford Aggregate. Winners on the day were Verna Lane and Robin Lyell with a well compiled 78 points. Runners up were Helen Duff and Bev Gerdes with 75 points. There were also some pretty average scores with the wind and trees being the main cause of hole blowouts.
NTP on ninth went to Fae Grogan and on the 18th to Doreen Barnes. Ball Sweep went to Verna, Robin, Helen, Bev, Doreen Barnes and Janet Smith 69 c/b.
Other competitions currently in progress are the Dot Coady Matchplay and the Billabong Pairs Matchplay. The Dot Coady is up to the final and this will be played shortly between Janet Smith and Enid Baker. The Billabong is up to the semis where Colleen Bratton and Judy Hodge will play Julie Wood and Enid Baker and Ev Uphill and Robin Lyell will play Janet Smith and Sharon Grierson. Good luck ladies.
Alison Kingston attended the Condobolin tournament last Sunday and came home with a nice prize for being runner-up in the B grade Handicap. Sarah Black and Robin Lyell attended the Cootamundra Tournament. Although they did not come home with the prizes they would have had valuable practice for the upcoming Veterans Tournament in September. Sarah did bring home a raffle prize.
This coming Saturday and Sunday is the Sand Green / Grass Green championships at Grenfell and Forbes. A number of Forbes ladies are participating.
The local comp for Saturday is an 18 hole stableford in one division sponsored by Elders. Barb is on cards. Next Wednesday is an 18 hole stableford sponsored by Blue Sky in two divisions. Enid is on cards. Upcoming tournaments are Narromine on Wednesday August 22, Manildra Thursday August 30 and Canowindra on Thursday September 6.
