Every year early childhood centres, schools and community gather to celebrate all things literacy and take part in various activities and fun.
This year, an estimated 500 kids will gather to take part in what Forbes Birth to Kinder committee member Maree Yapp says is the biggest yet.
Reading Downtown Day has 18 major activities set to get the kids involved in literacy.
These range from singing and music based, to interactive storytelling and reading activities with a focus on reducing rubbish.
Forbes Birth to Kinder was launched in 2004 with a vision to raise awareness in the Forbes community about the importance of reading, talking and singing to children right from birth.
The launch of the early literacy campaign was in response to research indicating the phonemic awareness of children entering Kindergarten was an indicator of success at school.
This year, Forbes’ St George branch has pitched in to help Forbes Birth to Kinder so they can continue the great work they are doing in the area.
Branch manager Melissa Nicholson says Forbes Birth to Kinder deserves broader recognition and awareness of the service they are providing to our community.
Sponsorship from St George will enable the continuity of the Books for Newborns strategy for the coming year and will assist with the delivery of fun activities at Reading Downtown Day.
Forbes Birth to Kinder committee member, Raewyn Molloy said they are looking forward to having the St George Dragon at the Reading Downtown Day.
“The St George Dragon and helpers always brings a colour and fun to the day,” she said.
