A number of talented juniors were part of representative sides that travelled to Forster for the competition in October.
The Rugby Sevens tournament was played from October 12 to 14 and consists of teams in under 13, 15 and 17 boys and girls.
In all, 215 games were played on three fields over the three days and Tournament Director Michael Doyle said this is a significant occasion on the NSW rugby calendar.
In the girls squads, Forbes was represented in all three age groups by locals Sally Rout, Jorja Simpson and Ruby Stitt and Cassie and Ashleigh Ward.
The Under 13s Central West 7s girls squad finished the tournament strongly in sixth place, while the U15s squad finished in fourth place when they won the Shield.
Under 15s player, Ruby Stitt said the tournament was a good experience for her and the team.
The Under 17s Central West 7s girls squad finished strongly in the Rugby Sevens Championship as well, securing fourth place.
Under 17s player Ashleigh Ward said they had a good run, with just missing out on competing in the grand final after a last minute try by their opponents.
Ms Ward said the Junior Rugby Sevens Championship was very physical, and that they learnt a lot of new skills in the competition.
This year is the first time an equal number of girls’ and boys’ teams have been registered for the event.
“The girls’ division has grown from initially only an Under 17s age group to now include the Under 15s and Under 13s. This is the most girls we’ve ever had at the Championships,” Doyle said.
“It’s very exciting because we have some teams that have played rugby and some teams that have never played. So not only is it a great introduction to rugby union for these young players, it’s really a way to spread the word of Rugby Sevens around the state of NSW, and to have an event that underlines what the spirit of the game is all about, enjoyment and participation.”
The Under 13s Central West 7s boys squad finished the tournament as runners up in the Plate Final.
We hope to bring you more news about the Central West 7s boys squads in upcoming editions.
