The school’s cattle team claimed supreme champion carcase at the annual Scone competition.
With a score of 94.15 points under the Meat Standards Australia (MSA) grading system, the heavy weight Limousin steer called Redman was bred by Phil and Sheridan Kirk, Wilworril Limousins, Peak Hill.
The top carcase also took out the heavy weight and overall jackpot, and the highest scoring Limousin or Limousin cross carcase.
The cattle team also finished strongly in the live judging component with two first places, two second places, one third placing and a highly commended steer.
Seventeen students from Red Bend’s cattle team took 10 steers to the Bonanza where they faced some tough competition with 390 steers entered in various categories.
Cattle team coordinator Susan Earl said this was a strong showing for Wilworril Limousins, which had donated five of the steers that took out prizes.
Mrs Earl said that the cattle team are very excited about the results of the Beef Bonanza.
“It’s a big buzz to win something like this,” Mrs Earl said.
The cattle team also took home several prizes in the parading categories, with students taking out a first place, four second places, two fourth places and a fifth place.
The members of the cattle team ranged from year eight to year eleven and competed against 890 students from across the state in the parading categories.
Mrs Earl said it is nice to see some of the results of all of their hard work in preparing the cattle for the show.
“There’s lots of great benefits from this program all of the time, but when this sort of thing happens from time to time it gives you a that extra buzz and confidence that you’re heading in the right direction,” she said.
Mrs Earl said they would like to thank people and businesses like Advanced Animal Nutrition who donated premix for feed.
The cattle team’s attention now turns to preparing for the Sydney Royal Easter Show in April.
They have begun breaking in some of the cattle that they will be entering in next year’s Sydney Royal.
