A report published in Tuesday's Advocate told of the drama which highlighted the finish to A grade. It had everything with Graeme Howland from Dunheved looking to return home to Sydney with a score of one over 73 saw him sit in the clubhouse for around three hours hoping for a win or play-off before Peter, and Steve Betland, come in at the end of the field to overcome the talented State Seniors Representative.
While slightly disappointed at not winning Graeme did acknowledge while waiting he was not overconfident of a win as he had heard about the local talents, especially those at the end of the field.
Graeme did not go home empty handed, he did win the best scratch score by a visitor and openly stated he is going to spread the word amongst his fellow club and state players as to how good the classic and all that went with it was.
Last weekend we hosted players from 36 clubs and the feeling on Sunday night with several new visitors next year will be even better. The club hosted players from Queensland down to Canberra and Wagga, Nelson Bay, Sydney to Tumut and a host of players in between.
Events like this don't just happen. It takes a great deal of work. This year more than half of the seven person committee were missing up until the last few days so it was left to a couple to make sure all was in place for the success we had.
It would be amiss if special mention wasn't made of the untiring efforts of first time committee members, Mike Sutcliffe and Allan Rees. Both are what you want on a committee, they don't leave anything to chance, they make it happen.
Mike, newly elected secretary/treasurer was everywhere helping, seeking to learn how the 'show' runs. Feather in his cap was the calcutta, and it was a success. Mike sold the tickets, he was at the draw, he handled proceeds from the sale and distributed the winnings. As Mike said, “I now know for next year'.
The same for Allan, as they say if you want a job done properly 'get a busy man to do it.” That sits 100 per cent with Allan. What didn't he do? He helped with sponsorship, on the course, banners, barbeque cooking and even had time to capably handle the chairperson duties during presentations.
Two members the club can be proud of. The same can be said for the welcome president Andrew McDonald gave prior to presentations and those of Mayor Phyllis Miller who stated how delighted she and the shire are with the success of Forbes golf.
As Allan quite rightly said prior to presentations there are many who deserve thanks for support, first and foremost sponsors. “:Huge support again once again,” Allan added.
Other comments - To all who travelled, – thanks to 'Jack' and Darren and their helpers, course condition best its been for years – Ash and Emma in the 'Golfie' Hotel, fantastic support – 'Didget' and his Saturday BBQ helpers and the Dukes family for manning the half way house. Top service.
Above all Allen mentioned helpers/workers always there. The Pro Shop 'team' of Ray, Marg, Geoff and Stevie G for cart supply and draw organising plus on course starters Neil and Geoff – those who purchased raffle and calcutta tickets, your yearly help with all proceeds going back to the FGA.
Above all, Beryl and Linnie Roberts for their excellent work with scoring and writing up cards. Absolutely fantastic workers. If we've missed anyone, the club's thanks you for support which is always welcomed.
