You can’t get out first ball – unless you’re run out – and we make the boundaries shorter so it’s easier to get big scores. Everyone has loved the Big Bash and this is our own version of it.
- Andrew Glasson
The increasingly popular annual cricket competition features eight-a-side teams, with eight overs of eight balls making up each innings.
It’s always a fun day, says organiser and Forbes Cricket Association’s Andrew Glasson.
Registration forms are available from Tuesday at the Forbes Advocate office and Post Office Hotel.
The modified version of the game has a number of rule changes to make it an exciting day both for players and spectators.
“You can’t get out first ball – unless you’re run out – and we make the boundaries shorter so it’s easier to get big scores,” Glasson said.
“Everyone has loved the Big Bash and this is our own version of it.”
Other modifications to the rules for the one-day carnival include only re-bowling wides and no balls in the last over of the innings.
Forbes’ annual Super 8s competition usually attracts 20 teams to the Botanical Gardens for a full day of fast-paced cricket.
Teams do come from around the west, with a lot of locals coming home and bringing their mates for a game.
The 2017 competition attracted 24 teams and about 250 players including a good number of juniors, and it was a lot of fun.
It sounds unbelievable with a mere eight overs per side, but that year Troy Hurford and Damian Kennedy scored 112 each in a 226-strong partnership.
Jarrod McDean was another to score a century, not out.
Having missed out on the event in 2018, organisers are hoping for another excellent turnout this year.
The competition is divided into A Grade and B grade, play starts about 9am and each team is guaranteed at least three games.
It’s not only a good day for the players but exciting cricket for the spectators.
Finals in each grade usually kick off about 5pm.
There is full canteen available throughout the day, with Can Assist always providing the day’s hospitality right through from breakfast time.
The Super 8s competition is a fundraiser for the Forbes cricket association, helping provide turf wickets for the local adult and junior competitions.
Nomination forms need to be returned to Andrew Glasson, to the Post Office Hotel or Forbes Advocate office by 5pm Thursday January 18.
The draw for the Saturday carnival will be communicated to team captains on Friday.
The Forbes Services Memorial Club local men’s cricket competition has had a short Christmas / New Year break and returns Saturday January 12.
There’ll be more on what The App is expecting from this weekend’s games in Friday’s edition.
Junior cricket remains in recess until school resumes.
