Seven-month-old 'Pud' was travelling with his owner when their truck, loaded with hay, left the road and overturned late last Thursday evening.
While driver Scott was flown to Orange hospital, his red cattle dog escaped injury.
He was taken from the crash, 30km from Forbes on the Newell Highway, to the local pound to be cared for.
Pud stayed with the council rangers for five days while Scott was recuperating in hospital.
"The young dog left a lasting impression on the responding ambulance officers, who came to visit Pud the next day to see if he was okay," a Forbes Shire Council statement about the event said.
"Scott, Pud's owner, would like to pass on his sincere thanks to all involved in his rescue: ambulance, fire brigade and police.
"He would also like to thank Forbes Shire Council for looking after his beloved dog, Pud, while he was in hospital."
