Police on Friday arrested a 44-year-old man in Muswellbrook in relation to the break and enter.
It is alleged a man forced open the door of a Farnell Street home about 3.30am on Wednesday September 13, 2017.
Once inside, the intruder allegedly struck a 71-year-old male occupant several times with an iron bar.
Once the iron bar was removed from the alleged attacker's grasp, he ran from the scene.
The injured man attended Forbes Hospital in a serious but stable condition, suffering head injuries.
Following an examination of the scene by officers from Central West Police District, Strike Force Buttsworth was established.
On Friday, as a result of investigations, police arrested a man in Muswellbrook.
He was taken to Muswellbrook Police Station and charged with special aggravated break and enter with intent to wound.
He was refused bail to appear at Wyong Local Court via video link tomorrow (Saturday 18 May 2019).
