Choosing the right school for your child is one of the most important decisions you will ever make as it helps to provide them with a sound base for the future.
For some parents the decision is already made as zones are in place for some government schools while others may be able to look at out-of-area institutions.
There is also the choice of having your child receiving a private education or you can even consider home schooling if you have the time to invest.
Whichever you decide there are still some factors that should be considered selecting the best option.
Knowledge
Decide what type of education would suit your child. All schools teach the '3R's' but some also focus on different aspects of life with specialist programs such as mathematics, music, sports, arts and environment.
Facilities
Having the right equipment, good classrooms and great teachers helps children and their parents feel secure in the knowledge that their needs are being met. Good facilities and infrastructure such as libraries, playgrounds, technology and sports teams can help nurture a young mind.
Inclusivity
Becoming involved in your child's education can demonstrate some wonderful traits and life lessons. Parents and families are often encouraged to support and volunteer in schools such as giving time to help fundraise, taking on canteen duties or even giving a helping hand with some one-on-one time during class.
Support
If a child does need extra support, discuss with staff to discover if the school can offer assistance. Children with special needs and disabilities can be given support through extra assistance and equipment, but only if the school has been made aware of the situation. Flexible learning options may also be available if a student has trouble staying at school.
Connectivity
Parents often look at allowing their children to grow in a community situation. This means attending sessions such as playgroup at the same campus as the kindergarten, primary school and even out of school hours care. This way kids are familiar with their surroundings and have the ability to continue meaningful friendships as they grow.
...And more
There are also other factors which can help you make a decision on education.
- How many children are in each class?
- How does the institution deal with behaviour management?
- Is the school co-educational or single-sex?
- What is the school's ethos, and how is it valued?
- Do the children become involved in the wider community?
- Is the cost of schooling affordable for the family?
- Is there a waiting list? If so, how early do you need to make enquiries?
Whatever decision you make be comforted in the knowledge that your child, no matter which school they attend, has the privilege of receiving an education.
