Hives took the opening set 6-3 thanks in part to a her ability to hold onto her service games, winning all five.
The second set was a different story as Fourlis took control of errors from Hives, winning five games in a row to take the set 6-3.
Things were looking grim for Hives, as Fourlis took the opening two games in the final set, forcing the Kingston native to lift her performance.
Hives would win three of the next four games to draw even with her opponent at three games before pulling away from Fourlis and securing a 6-3 final game victory.
Hives will meet Japanese 24-year-old Nagi Hanatani in the round of 16 on Thursday.
The two have never faced off before. Hanatani, having secured her spot in the tournament as a qualifier, is coming off three consecutive victories heading into the match-up with the top-seeded Hives.
