Formerly from New Zealand, talented apprentice jockey Kate Cowan has been keenly sought by trainers and has a good book of rides for tomorrow at the Spring TAB race meeting hosted by the award winning Forbes Jockey Club.
The diminutive apprentice who registers 49kg on the scales was a sensation in New Zealand and at a major carnival at Riccarton in May 2017 was the star rider, winning the Group 3 Winter Cup on Nashville and then a treble at the following meeting.
Cowan came to South Australia earlier this year and rode several winners including a first-up win at Morphettville on the John O'Connor trained Akkacan.
The now 26-year-old Kate Cowan recently became apprenticed to Dubbo trainer Kody Nestor after being recommended by Melbourne Cup winning jockey Michelle Payne and star Sydney jockey Kathy O'Hara.
The most important win for Cowan since coming to Dubbo was at Mudgee where she produced a polished front-running ride on the Brett Thompson, Gulgong trained Sugar Dance to win the $30,000 Mudgee Mug.
At Forbes her rides include the Kody Nestor-trained Bellator in the opening event, the 1200 metres Peter Maher Shearing Services & Bryton Wool Maiden Handicap.
A lightly raced six year old gelding, Bellator hit the lead at Mudgee last week before being overhauled and beaten a half neck by Shadesmar.
Other rides for Kate Cowan are Sprezzatura, Snippety Snip and Purely Royal.Another jockey with an International background to ride at Forbes will be Rasit Yetimova, formerly from Turkey, who initially moved to Tasmania where he won an Apprentices Premiership.
Now based at Dubbo, Rasit Yetimova has ridden a string of recent winners for Dubbo trainer Connie Greig and they again combine at Forbes with Dizzy Success, Battle Fury and Naoko.
Keeping with the International theme, apprentice Qin Yong who came to Hawkesbury from China last year, has four rides for Dubbo trainer Michael Lunn, Beleura Demon, Count On Conflict, Proudest Moment and Thorn Lass while he has been booked for Satan Da by Karen Lunn from Dubbo and Enigami by Tara & Philippe Vigouroux from Hawkesbury.
A local win is always popular and Forbes trainers represented are Barry Molloy with Casino Ace, Neil Smart with Illourie Arch and Dennis Bush with Mel Bea, Harbour Breeze and Yeas And Nays while former Forbes trainer Frank Hayes, now at Dubbo, has Court In Camers engaged.
Forbes Jockey Club committee members are still on a high after winning the Outstanding Achievement Award at the Country Racing presentation night.
Adding further merit to this Award is the fact there are 120 Country Race Clubs in New South Wales.
First race at Forbes is scheduled for 2.40pm.
