The talented unicycle rider is fast making a name for herself in the sport after a dominant performance at the Australian Unicycle Championships in Canberra.

The nine-year-old won five separate races at the event known as UNINATS.

She won the 100-metre and 400-metre sprint events in the nation's capital and submitted the fastest female time on the day.

She also took out an agility-based event known as the slalom, as well as two hill-based events.

She also competed in an Asia Pacific Hockey competition in which competitors play the game on unicycles.

Lewis told The Courier she doesn't know how she got so good, but she loved to race.

"There was a talent competition and a girl from school was riding a unicycle and then I decided to get one," she said.

Receiving a unicycle for her eighth birthday, the hobby sparked a chain reaction in her family.

Pretty soon her father, mother and siblings all found themselves perched atop the one-wheel contraption.

"Her dad is unicycle gung-ho and always wants to go out riding with her these days," Lewis's mother Crystal said.

"He is an engineer, so I think a combination of his mechanical mind is what was able to pair her with the right bike.

"She is really athletic, she used to do gymnastics and she has a very strong will, and keeps going with anything she does.

"She likes the challenge, she's always drawn to anything that's challenging."

Her abilities haven't gone unnoticed added Crystal - her impressive skills have qualified her for the unicycle world titles in France.

It's a trip the family is considering taking - but only if Summer wants to.

In the meantime, the family have taken their passion public by starting the Ballarat Unicycle Club where they have been teaching the sport to members of the community.

"We run it once a week and all these kids come and we teach them how to ride backwards and forwards and play hockey," Crystal said.

"It's changed our life and now we have this whole unicycle community."
