Named after the late cardiac surgeon and pioneer of modern heart transplantation, Dr Victor Chang, these awards were established to celebrate young, gifted students and to foster growth in scientific studies.

The awards were presented to students from across the region in Dubbo on November 20, with Tom recognised for his dedication to biology studies.

As well as receiving the award, Tom will join more than 200 students from across NSW on a tour of the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute.

Tom said he is really excited to see what the scientists and researchers do at the institute.

Forbes High School principal Safija Bristina said it is a well deserved award for Tom and to be nominated for it is a privilege.

Mrs Bristina said she hopes the award will help motivate Tom to pursue his interests in the science field after completing high school.
